This was a solid conclusion to the series for me over all! I enjoyed the writing of this series, the relationship between Crier and Ayla, and the themes it grapples with. This book completes both of their arcs well and all of the scenes between them were really delightful! There were some really good romantic moments and I was really rooting for them. I also liked the way Crier forms more relationships with humans, both because the differences between the Automa and the humans continue to be very interesting, and because I thought it was a really great character choice for Crier to care about and fight for all humans, not just Ayla. I felt like Ayla’s arc was a little bit less developed just in terms of her reconnecting with her long-lost twin, but it was still satisfying over all! Like the first one, I think I would’ve loved this even more if I read it when I was a little younger, as I’ve been moving away from YA for the past few years, but I still wanted to see this series out. And I’m very glad I did! This is a really solid YA series on the whole with a super interesting premise, a well-built romance, and good prose!

SO

Perfect continuation and conclusion of an absolutely amazing duology. Cannot say enough good things, loved it start to finish.

Iron Heart continues the story of Crier's war. With Crier and Ayla separated, their relationship is tested as war begins to break out.
This fully expands on the lore established in the first. It wraps up unanswered questions that held back the first one, and fleshes out the world all the more. The interactions between the two were more compelling than in the first, mostly due to the added nuance of their relationship.
Convenience is an issue with this book, however, and the events of the story seem incredibly unrealistic and far-fetched. Coincidences and plot armor are evident throughout, making it impossible to ignore and hindering full immersion in the story.
This continuation is not quite as good as the first book, but nevertheless, it serves its job of completing these characters' stories well enough.
