WOW...just...WOW! I'm 100% looking forward to the next book and am really excited to see what's going to happen. If you haven't read this series, you're missing out on a awesome experience.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book MUCH more than I did HOURGLASS. Actually, considering the change-up in this book of narrators, it's NOT so surprising. My favorite, Kaleb, from HOURGLASS, is front and center in this second-installment.

And, OHMYGOODNESS, I think I love him. He, in my opinion, is SO much more interesting that Michael. I really do like Michael, and in real-life, I'd want MY daughter to date a "Michael", but he sure doesn't have the character and "spark" that Kaleb does. And through the first chapter of this book I found myself stewing over the fact that Emerson had chosen Michael and poor Kaleb, who obviously had feelings for her, was getting the short end of the stick.

All within the first few chapters, Kaleb's life looks pretty awful. His mother's still in a coma, his father is treating him differently after coming back from the dead, his friendship with Michael is strained, and he's got to sit there while the electricity goes in and out any time Michael and Emerson touch. Yeah. How can you NOT feel sorry for him?!

That's all just a part of what makes this story redeeming, however, because in the end, things don't end so badly for Kaleb. I won't say much else, but I definitely enjoyed the romance in this book. It wasn't forced, it put two very charismatic people together, and I can't wait to see where this goes!!!

As for the Jack/Cat part of the story, I think Ms. McEntire has more surprises in store for us. The first book, just skimmed the surface on what is REALLY going on with these two. But, in TIMEPIECE, we find out that Jack is not the only resistance that the Hourglass may face.

I'm so intrigued by this whole storyline now, that even without the love story in this book, I'd definitely want to read the rest of the series to figure out what happens next!

Three and a half stars. I did not like this book as much as I did the first one in this series. I think that a lot of the reason is that I liked the narrator of Hourglass a lot. This narrator was OK but I didn't appreciate the change in POV.

Great minds think alike…and avid readers often read the same books! So…when we discovered that we’d requested the same book from Net Galley, we decided to compare our thoughts and share them with you.

Ana: I’m going to come right out and say it…I liked Timepiece much more than Hourglass! I thought there was more adventure and mystery this time. The story was fast-moving as pieces of the puzzle fell into place on a regular basis and helped me understand the bigger picture. With a bad guy who wasn’t just an invisible threat but was physically there at every turn, I couldn’t read fast enough.

The characters’ powers are growing and changing and their relationships are more intense than ever. They’ve also matured since the last book and the reader is given an insider’s view into what makes them tick. All the characters from book one are here and they’re still well written but I loved Lily in this book. She’s so spunky and real that you just can’t help but root for her. I also enjoyed the fact that this book explores not just romantic relationships but also those between friends, parents and children.

Unlike the first book, which was written from Emerson’s point of view, this time we’re given the pleasure of getting to know Kaleb’s inner thoughts. Since he was my favorite character in the first book, I was very happy to have this story written from his point of view and equally pleased to get to know this bad boy with a heart of gold even better. My favorite Kaleb quote “I’m a bad ass. A bad ass who bakes when he’s depressed!” really just says it all about this character and, quite honestly, makes my heart beat just a little bit faster. I don’t know what the author’s plans are for the next book but may I humbly suggest it be written from Kaleb’s point of view again? With the twists this story took and the way it ended, I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Christina: Just like Ana, I also loved this book a little more than I loved Hourglass, and it may have had something to do with it being in Kaleb’s POV. In case you didn’t already know, the bad boys totally own me in books. It’s a… thing, or rather, I should I say I have a thing for them. But Kaleb isn’t just your typical bad boy because he has to build walls up and keep people at arm’s length to protect himself because he’s an empath, a person with the ability to feel others’ emotions. Naturally, the stronger his connection is to a person, the stronger his ties are to the person’s feelings, and to keep himself sane, he pushes people away. So, his exterior- tattoos, piercings, aloof attitude- screams that he’s your typical jerkoff, but in reality, he’s funny, wants to help others, and he cooks (mostly almost shirtless, but always with his ‘kiss the cook’ apron). Seriously, Kaleb may be my ideal male.

But enough of me drooling over him, there were other things about this book that I enjoyed, too. Surprisingly, I was more pulled into the story this time by the plot and not necessarily by the characters. There was the constant need to discover why the rips where evolving and becoming stronger along with all of the characters’ abilities. Then there was the mystery of who Jack really was and what or who he was truly after. This story read a bit like falling down the rabbit hole, with having to question everyone’s motive at every turn and figuring out what was real and what was fiction, who you could trust and who you couldn’t. And while it helped to move the plot along nicely, sometimes I felt too discombobulated to truly grasp what was going on in the story, which brings me to what I disliked in the story.

Timepiece felt busy and a little bit all over the place for me. (This may very well have been my fault because yesterday everything in my house was going to hell in a hand-basket and it was hard to concentrate and follow the story as well as I needed to in order to comprehend what was actually going on.) I felt myself having to reread passages or sometimes even pages to absorb what was happening because each page was packed with information. While in most stories I’d love this because there wouldn’t be any unnecessary reading, I think it may have hindered this novel in some cases because the logistics of time travel and the space-time continuum is already complicated enough.

Also, I missed the characters. As I’ve stated in other reviews, the best way to get me to enjoy your book is to make me love your characters. I’m not saying I don’t love the characters because I do. Even better, most of them grew emotionally in this story and getting to see more of Lily’s personality was a real treat. Yet, at times, I felt as though they all took a backseat to the plot and it was harder for me to connect to them. I didn’t feel myself getting as attached as I had been in Hourglass; therefore, I didn’t feel myself invested in the story as much.

All that being said, I’d rate this a solid 3.5, rounding up to a 4 because yeah, Kaleb is my type of man. Then there’s the fact of all the twists that came at the end, making me incredibly curious about the next book in the series.

A special thanks to Egmont USA for letting us preview this title from Net Galley. Timepiece hits shelves on Tuesday, June 12th.

With that, I’ll leave you with a bit of Kaleb’s conversation with himself.

“You are sweetness and light. Human cotton candy.”

*Christina takes a bite out of him. But shhh, don’t tell Ana, she thinks Kaleb is hers.*

I did not enjoy this as much as Hourglass. I didn't find Kaleb to be as well-developed a character as he could have been. I did enjoy seeing his relationship with Lily develop and the end of his pining for Emerson. I get very tired of the love triangles. The plot in this one isn't as satisfying and the threat being removed so quickly seemed anticlimactic. But still, I immediately started the next book.

NO! Books should not be allowed to end like that; it's it cruel because now I have to wait to find out how it ends. But that was amazing, just as good as the first, if not better in some ways. This not it isn’t Emma’s POV that we see the world from, it’s Kaleb’s and it was enjoyable. I feel that we got to understand him more as a character and I enjoyed it because I liked him anyway, now I love him. I know that everyone is obsessed with Em and Michael but Kaleb is just as big a character as they are.

It carries on where Hourglass left off and they’re in a lot of trouble. Everyone can now see the rips and they’re getting stronger. Everyone is scared and it’s all because of Jack Landers. They know they have to stop him but they have to find him first. Kaleb has a lot of questions and not a lot of answers but he’s about to find out.

Kaleb is a sweet heart. Yes, he’s your typical bad boy with the tattoos and muscle but underneath all that he a great guy who cares deeply about Em and her best friend Lily. From the start of this book we know something will happen with them and I like them together. She’s good for him and I don’t think Kaleb should be with Em anyway.

Kaleb’s ability to feel emotions and take them is interesting and we find out more about it in this book, some of it is shocking indeed but that’s what I loved. That I didn’t know what was happening, who was good, who was bad, and now more than ever I want to find out some answers.

Lily’s amazing, I want her as a best friend. She’s confident, sassy and isn’t afraid to get what she wants. And when she’s with Kaleb we see her for who she really is and it was great. We find out a bit more about her background which was great and about her ability. Lily and Kaleb compliment each other so well; it was great reading about them.

I couldn’t put this down from the moment I started it. I kept wanting to read to find out more and I like the short chapters because it makes the pace quicken and I feel like I’m flying through the pages. I cannot wait to read Infinityglass, even if it is being rewritten and may have a later release date. I’m just as excited.

Last year I read McEntire's debut Hourglass and was fascinated by the time travel aspect in particular as well as liking heroine Emerson who was going through some difficulties. I thought the secondary characters were lackluster and the romance unpalatable but I had a lot of questions left over so I picked up this sequel.

Unfortunately instead of continuing in Emerson's voice, this time our narrator is Kaleb, someone I didn't particularly like the first time as I found him too overbearing and grossly possessive while also being a giant man-whore. Plus he's tattooed and is an alcoholic. So not my dream guy at all. He lusted after Emerson from the get-go but she was already heads over heels for Michael, his best friend. While he still thinks about Em, he still has time for other girls and becomes involved in his own romance this go-around.

That romance is with Em's best friend Lily, who I liked in the first book although she didn't make enough appearances for me and I liked her again here. What I didn't like was the lack of chemistry I felt between the two. Neither this romance nor Em and Michael's really works for me, probably due to the insta-love or at least lust felt by three of the four people (Lily seems to be a bit of a holdout).

Another problem was my inability to remember some of what had happened in Hourglass. If possible, I would highly recommend reading these back to back. While most events came back to me, there is probably still stuff I missed. Therefore I spent some time in the beginning not only adjusting to the shift in narrator (it was very disorienting to read Kaleb's perspective on what Em was doing instead of her own) but also trying to feel my way back into the world.

Then there are the paranormal elements, something I really loved in the first book. Besides everything that occurred then, there is a lot of new information thrown at the reader. I appreciated every little tidbit we got but I still myself a little convinced, largely due to the time jumping nature of one of the villains. Turns out this character can remove memories from people, leaving them empty and confused while also not telling the audience

Overall: Characters I couldn't connect with, aggravating romance, and confusing timeline; just not the book for me. However I can see that a lot of other readers love Kaleb so don't let my distaste put you off.

Cover: Trying to figure out if this is supposed to be Em or someone else? I did prefer the black dress of the first book but I think the shadow is really cool here.

Geez.... first and foremost i have to say that this book exceeded my expectations. Now at first they were kind of low, because it was from the point of view of Kaleb, and since i knew he had a thing for Emerson, i thought it would be all love sick and stupid. But it wasnt and it made me happy that he gets a girl and finally i think things are gonna be all right when bam! Another cliff hanger and another book. Im not even dissapointed. Series like this one make it worth the wait till the next book. Definitely recommending this.

I really liked getting to see things happen from a different perspective & it was nice to get inside Kaleb's head. It was also great to see the transformation he goes through in this book. The plot had some awesome twists & turns and I am definitely excited for the next book. Lily was an awesome character, loved her! What I really loved about this book was getting to find out more about the past, as well as Chronos, Teague, Jack, & the Infinityglass. I am definitely excited to see what will happen next, even though Michael makes things a bit of a downer at times, he makes me nervous.

I am not really a bad boy type of girl so I wasn't swooning over Kaleb. Most of the time I wanted to punch him, but he did have his moments. I loved the evolution of his & Lily's relationship though, it was very entertaining. It was really interesting to see how Kaleb's power works & what happens when he does it, I found it fascinating. I really loved getting to see Emerson & Michael through his eyes, even though it was sad at first. Their little group has a great dynamic & some really good scenes together. I did love seeing things work out for Kaleb finally. The introduction of some new characters was fun to becasue they were all mysterious, especially Poe.

I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book, I am loving the time travel!

This and other reviews can be found on Reading Between Classes

Cover Impressions: I really do like this cover. It is simple, clean and effective.

The Gist: In this sequel to Hourglass we switch to Kaleb's point of view and learn more about his emphatic powers. Jack Landers is still on the lose and time rips are becoming more frequent, and real, than ever. Against this backdrop, The Hourglass is issued an ultimatum, find and deliver Jack, or face an alternate timeline that could destroy its members.

Review: This book was not easy to get into. I read Hourglass quite a long time ago and, despite re-reading my review and checking this site I still found it very difficult to remember exactly what had happened and what we had previously learned about Rips and Time Traveling. I was pretty confused for at least the first 50 pages or so.

I was also unimpressed with the we-hate-each-other-so-much-you-just-know-we-are-going-to-end-up-together romance that I have seen over and over again. And, of course, Kaleb becomes a one woman gal practically over night. Because, as we all know, bad boys are only bad boys until the right girl comes along!

I did eventually come to like Kaleb and I got sucked into the story once it got going. The ending was a little unsatisfying but, that is par for the course for middle book in a trilogy (this is a trilogy right? Someone correct me if I am wrong). I do feel kinda like. in the end, nothing was accomplished in this book that couldn't have been achieved in a short story or novella.

I am beginning to think that time travel books are just not for me. It seems like cheating to be able to benefit from the shock value of killing off characters only to cheapen it by changing time/bringing them back to life. There also tend to be long-winded explanations of how time travel works and complicated materials and/or circumstances required. Timpiece had both of these.

Overall, I was underwhelmed by Timepiece. There wasn't really anything wrong with the writing. The characters were enjoyable enough. The plot moved at a decent pace. I guess there just wasn't anything that stood out as GREAT and this (coupled with my Time Traveling issues) left me lukewarm at best
