I really enjoyed this. It was gothic and dark but also weirdly cozy. The progression of each character arc was super well paced, and the ending was unexpectedly comforting.
With all that talk about no good options, no happy endings, I was reallyyyy expecting to get my heart broken here but nope! Happy ending! I was almost disappointed by that lol. Almostttttt.

I haven't actually read any other books by this author, but I may need to go read Half a Soul now. I am curious to find out how much I've accidentally spoiled for myself by starting with this book though... I guess we'll see!

I was vaguely aware that this series was set in the same world as the Regency Faerie Tales, but it's a lot more connected than I expected, so I wish I'd actually finished that trilogy first.

That said, it didn't affect my ability to follow and I still enjoyed the story! It was creative in the way it provided the relevant plot history and the setting is very limited. I just recognized a lot of names and world info, so I was aware of gaps in my info.

I also listened to the audiobook, which was generally good, but I was having some trouble visualizing things. I think reading a different format might have helped me, but not enough to change the rating.

I enjoyed the gothic vibes in this but the writing felt a bit disjointed to me, I didn't realize this was connected to another book either until I read reviews, so maybe I would've enjoyed this more if I read the previous book. The romance was unexpected and I found this to move slow because the plot was lacking. I liked Winnie, she came off as a strong character and her companion, Oliver, was a great addition. I didn't hate this, nor did I love it but overall, a decent read.

Thank you NetGalley and Starwatch Press for the ARC!

Very unique.  Great ending. Can’t wait for next book.
