This was the second WW2 novel on the trot, but where "The Night Shift" was about people living their daily lives in the blitz, "Restless" is a tense spy thriller about a woman recruited by the british intelligence service and caught in the midst of an international plot in 1941. Like Brazzaville Beach, the protagonist is a well-drawn, engaging woman. A lot of male writers portray their heroines as too knowing, too competent, perhaps as a way of pandering to a certain type of reader, but Boyd seems to me to be able to construct very believable women (but then I'm not a woman so maybe I'm not the best judge!)
The historical background is original and interesting and the action feels rooted in reality - in other words, it's more intelligent than the a lot of spy novels.

This should be 3.5. Beautifully written spy story with a dual narrative moving from World War 2 to the hot summer of 1976. Lots of intrigue but I couldn’t warm to any of the characters. Raised interestingly topical issues about fake news and the secrets people keep even from those they are closest to. A good read but not as good as I was expecting.

Adored this clever thriller set both during WWII where Eva is embroiled in the secret service, and the 1970s where she reveals to her unsuspecting daughter Ruth that’s she’s not Sally from London but someone living a created life. Really beautifully done - draws you in and sweeps you along.
