This is a really good spy novel. There is a story within a story and very effectively told, I just had to keep turning the page. It's set in the sweltering summer of 1976 while telling a story that takes place in the second world war. This is nothing like the his other books - it's not exactly a new ide but was a new idea for this author.

it wads different kind of spy story. I found the Eva Delectorskaya sections more interesting than the Ruth sections.

I was a big fan of the other two books of William Boyd I've read, The New Confessions and A Good Man in Africa, so I was a bit disappointed in this one. Not that it was bad per se, just really not for me. I really love how he writes characters with embarrassing honesty, but it feels a bit more stripped back for a mainstream audience this time out. Probably an ideal poolside, holiday book.
