I hadn’t read anything by Shalini Boland before, so I was excited to get stuck into this book. If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know how much I love psychological thrillers and this one sounded very promising.
It’s about a woman named Lizzy who finds herself with a stalker. She doesn’t know who it could be and goes through all of the possible options. The notes get creepier and the acts against her become worse. As there has been bad blood between Lizzy and her sister, her thoughts immediately go to her. Lizzy doesn’t know who to suspect and as the disturbing notes continue, she knows she has to turn to the police before it’s too late.
It’s hard to say too much about this book without ruining it, so I’ll try to keep it brief!
I thought this was a great read. It certainly kept me turning the pages. I was reading it during a train journey and it certainly helped pass the time. I couldn’t put it down. I think the reason why I didn’t rate this book any higher was that I wish it was a bit more intense. I want my skin to crawl when I’m reading a psychological thriller. I’m not sure what that says about me. There were also some moments that I found quite questionable and a little far fetched.
However, this shouldn’t sway you from picking up this book. It kept me interested and guessing throughout.

I finally got round to reading this! I adored Shalini Boland’s previous book, The Millionaire’s Wife, so I was really looking forward to reading this one.
Lizzy Beresford seems to have the perfect life. Gorgeous boyfriend, great job living in the quiet village of Malmesbury but that’s all shattered when she finds a creepy letter in her house.
More threatening letters and incidents make Lizzy suspicious of everyone around her. Who would hate her this much? She automatically thinks of her sister Emma, with whom she had a falling out years ago but it turns out she’s been receiving letters too.
Who could be targetting them both?
So I have to be honest I’ve been struggling with my reading of late, nothing appeals to me and frankly I’m not enjoying anything but picking up Shalini Boland’s book was just what I needed. She has a great writing style with believable characters that pull you and not let you go until you’ve finished!
A lot of people will be like, oh no, not another woman being stalked but Shalini Boland makes this slightly tired trope her own. What was refreshing was the police actually taking the letters seriously, I don’t know how many books I’ve read that the police have just brushed it off and made the character feel like they’re crazy!
I kind of understood Lizzy, even if she wasn’t overly likeable. Her self esteem is a little on the low side and is not one for a confrontation or upsetting people, my problem was she seemed to overreact quite a lot of the time which I found a little frustrating. Also her boyfriend Joe did annoy me with his quick temper and his possessive attitude which made me want Lizzy to just dump him!
I have to be honest, I felt this was a little more slow burn than the Millionaire’s Wife and the majority of the ending was a little predictable which I didn’t mind. My only quibble was the little twist at the end which I didn’t really like but of course that’s just my opinion.
The Silent Sister is a slow burn domestic thriller with believable characters and a realistic setting, a must for fans of psychological thrillers.

Oh. My. Word! This book was a fast-paced, quick read that kept me on my toes from the first page. I’ve read a lot of thrillers lately and most of the time I can somewhat decode the mystery before the end, but this one stumped me until the very end.
Lizzy begins to receive “stalker” letters and cannot seem to determine where they are coming from. She begins to doubt her feelings about everyone she comes into contact with, even those closest to her. In the end, this mystery unravels brilliantly!
If you enjoy a great thriller that will keep you guessing, this book is for you!

Lizzy has a great life, lives with her devoted boyfriend in a quaint little cottage. She loves her job and works with her best friend. But when she receives a letter with a shocking confession, her life slowly falls apart.
From the moment I started this read, I knew that I would not put my kindle down until I had finished it. Lizzy was like quite a few girls that you walk past every day, a lovely character, who was happy with her life. She loved her boyfriend and spent every spare moment with him. When she found the 1st letter she shrugged it off and whilst it bothered her she carried on with her life. It was not until the situation worsened that she began to worry and her imagination went into overtime. Joe her boyfriend got my back up from the moment she mentioned the letters to him, whilst he showed concern, he blamed her and as the story continued you realise he was controlling and had his own secret. Not only did Lizzy have to deal with her stalker, she also had to deal with multiple thefts in the shop she was running and a strained relationship with her sister, who she had not spoke to in over 5 years.
As I have already mentioned this was a page turner, and throughout I was trying to guess who was sending Lizzy the letters. What didn’t help was that the author threw in a handful of characters that were close to Lizzy and I was slowly ticking of their motives in my mind. This story was well planned and flowed seamlessly. There were enough twists so not to make the story overcomplicated and even when the author revealed the full story she still managed to surprise me at the end. There were concerns when the cat was mentioned and I was holding my breath whilst I read the scenes about Frank.
Whilst I have quite a few of these authors books on my kindle this was the first one that I have read. This is a must for lovers of psychological thrillers.

Someone is stocking Lizzy Beresford. The first letter comes literally through the floorboards of her house. The letters keep coming as she goes about her life, and each of them get more specific and creepier than the earlier ones. Her paranoia grows, as you might expect, and she’s having problems at work with an employee who seems to be embezzling.
Lizzy and her sister, Emma, are estranged. The two fought over Lizzy’s boyfriend, the belligerent overprotective Joe. He insists Emma came onto him; Lizzy believes him. As a result, the two don’t talk anymore.
I grant the ending is a surprise, and maybe I’m getting numb to the impact of books in the thriller genre. This just didn’t do much for me. I have other books on my hard drive from this author, and I guess I’ll read them. But this one didn’t electrify me to the edge of my seat.

Lizzy is loved up with her boyfriend Joe, living in a quaint cottage she rents from the man who she manages a shop for. Her life isn't perfect as she hasn't spoken to her sister for quite a few years but otherwise it's good until she starts receiving disturbing letters.
This is one of those stories that apart from Lizzy, I didn't trust anyone. I was desperately trying to work out who could be behind the letters and I was so certain I had it sussed, only to realise I'd been wrong all along.
This was a quick read that I flew through as the tension mounts and things for Lizzy get more disturbing. The author really has you caring for the main character so you worry about them making everything that is happening affect you even more.
The Silent Sister is a suspenseful and thrilling read that had me hooked and turning those pages. A deliciously dark and twisted read. Shalini Boland is without a doubt the queen of twists and she never disappoints. Another great read.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

This is the second book I have read of Shalini Boland (after “The Child Next Door”). The Silent Sister keeps up an excellent pace right throughout (unlike “The Child Next Door” which slackened in the middle). There is good suspense and multiple twists/revelations in the end.
Lizzy Beresford works at a store and has what seems to be a contented life with a steady boyfriend since 5 years. However, she has not been on talking terms with her sister for many years now, and meetings at their mother’s place are painful. All of a sudden, Lizzy starts receiving short & terse threatening letters. The police are informed, but with very little to go on, do not make much headway. She confides in her neighbours, hoping someone will see something. The threats take a serious turn with an attempt on her life.
She cannot understand why anyone would do this. Is there a link to her sister, boyfriend or her neighbours?
There is a good buildup to the end with a series of events, and the story does not let up. There is a double twist & revelation at the end (quite unnecessary in my opinion as the story was great as it).
If psychological thriller novels interest you, this is a great book to read.
My rating: 4.5 / 5
