“I feel… so… tiny.” Eva took in the entire starlit expanse. “So… insignificant.” “Tiny—perhaps.” Rovender kept his eyes fixed on the rings. “Insignificant—never, Eva Nine. No living thing is insignificant.”

I read this series as a kid and decided to re read the first book as an adult. It is definitely still a wonderful book! I love the illustrations that are included and I think the writing is great. Overall, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for me. Great read for people of any age!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = This book was phenomenal and very difficult to put down. The characters were lovable, the plot was great, and the writing was strong. Definitely have a book hangover. I know this will be a story I think about for a long time. Highly recommend to everyone!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = This book was very good but I was able to put it down for the night. The characters were good, the plot was fine, and the writing was good. I’ll recommend this book to others. There were definitely moments from the book I really liked, maybe even loved, and there were some parts that may have some room for improvement. I definitely recommend giving this book a try!
⭐️⭐️⭐️ = This book was fine. The characters, plot, and writing were all okay, but nothing extraordinary. I may have had an issue with some pieces in the plot or the writing. I may recommend this book to some people but not everyone I run into. It was a good book - it just wasn’t a favorite of mine.
⭐️⭐️ = This book was okay but far from a favorite. There may have been some moments that I liked, but overall, I may have had a bigger issue with the characters, plot, or the writing. I don’t plan on recommending this book to most people, or anyone at all. Just wasn’t for me.
⭐️ = This book I actually disliked. Definitely wasn’t my cup of tea and there wasn’t anything I enjoyed about it. I actually had a tough time getting through this book and may have not even finished it. I may have had major issues with the character, plot, or the writing. I do not recommend.

I think I like fantasy stories when the world is unexplored and scary and too big for the main character. And then it just kinda isn't and I lose interest.

A great sci-fi adventure, visually stunning.

I've had a copy of this sat on the shelf for years, picked it up after seeing a recommendation. Finally, I've got around to reading it, and found myself totally enjoying a 'traditional feeling' adventure/chase/buddy/road movie mix of children's science fiction.

Eva Nine has lived underground her whole life, her only companion a robot whose purpose is to raise her, train her and keep her safe. From what, Eva does not know. Eva longs to travel up to the surface, to explore and most importantly to meet other humans. She has a picture whose word 'Wondla' she desperately wants to search for.

Their hands are forced when their underground home is found and attacked, and Eva must escape alone. Now being pursued by a creature she cannot fight alone, Eva must learn how to exist in a new world, and of course, she will cross the path of others who may or may turn out to be friends/companions.

This speeds along nicely, despite it's brick-like appearance. Eva grows quickly into a brave protagonist, and there are some very appealing characters around her that build into those that will also develop personality through the series.

I don't intend to read the next books (too many others to read!), but I finished wanting to know what would come next for Eva.

I loved the idea of the Museum, there are questions about the ethics of studying/preserving for science, there are some wonderful biological touches, with descriptions of species and behaviours that make it quite anthropological.

The illustrations throughout are wonderful, there's a graphic novel quality to them, the colour palette is striking, and it brings the characters to life in your mind, making them into a cartoon adventure you'd have been happy to watch on weekend mornings.

Loved Muthr and Eva, loved their travelling companions and there are some Star Wars-like bad guys that were good and menacing. Readers will want their questions answering and probably ask for the next book right after finishing.

For ages 9-13.

6. Personal Response: Visiting the different worlds and seeing the varying cultures of each is exciting. It’s a whole new world of peoples to learn about. [return]7. Connections: This is a bit of a Lord of the Rings quest book, but for younger readers. It would be great in a quests display.

Read this book as a child and I was hooked. Read all the books in the series and I still love them just as much. Wish I could go back in time and read this book again for the first time.

Sci-Fi. Fantasy (a bit). Survival. Post-Apocalypse. Surreal. Future Earth (Orbona). Alien encounters.

Overall, this book reminds me of

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Summary:

Eva Nine was raised by Muthr (Multi Utility Task Help Robot) and she was the only human in her home, Sanctuary. The book is about a girl looking for other humans and much, much more.

My Thoughts

It's a good read but it's not the kind that would take your heart from the first page. It's the kind of book that you would greatly enjoy if you put everything on HIATUS. As in, continually read it, no page-stopping or any of that.

SpoilerAlso, Muthr died. I almost cried at the moment because I thought of what it would be like to lose a mother and a guide. Things are going to get harder without Muthr around.

In the end, Eva did find a human, a boy, in fact. And I am also sensing that Eva had a tiny, tiny crush on Hailey, the human boy.

After Muthr had gone, Rovender took over the task to take care of her.
