Fun House is intellectual and vulnerable. The cartoon style really helps show the emotion behind the complex thoughts. I was not familiar with all the literature references so I feel like I missed some points of the book :(

Not sure how to review this without creating my own diary entry. I will say that it was painfully relatable in some parts. Bechdel perfectly captured intensely complex and imperfect relationships with parents, and the difficulty of both wanting to and being terrified of finding common ground with people you want to be nothing like.

Side note, I felt wildly uncultured while reading this.

Bechdel simultaneously draws you in to punch you in the gut with beautiful chapter endings, and seems to be satisfied with keeping you at arms length during unnecessarily complex contemplations that leave you utterly confused. Especially if you aren't familiar with Greek mythology or the works of James Joyce. But definetly worth trying to grasp.

Reading full chapters in one go is an absolute must (if you are a slow reader like me and usually take lots of breaks - and thus need this kind of a note).

Also knowing that this is a think-piece memoir and not a who-done-it with a satisfying answer is key to setting your expectations.

i don’t think i’ve ever read a book that i’ve so closely related to in regards to my sentiments towards my father.
