Daddy issues, hello???
I'm kind of torn between a three- and four-star rating, but ended up siding with the latter because, well I mean, Nicci Harris really did come through with what she offered in the book description lol. This was an entertaining read—a lot more angst and nuance here, probably because the main characters are actually more complex and intriguing than those in the first book of this series.
I truly came away adoring Fawn, the FMC, more than anyone else in the book. Perhaps cynics and modern girl-bosses who need to have the descriptor "badass" in FMC's character traits before even giving them a chance will roll their eyes at her, but her vulnerability and tenderness are what made her shine despite everything life threw her way at such a young age. And to see that softness juxtaposed with the personality of Clay, the MMC, was captivating. I couldn't stop wanting to turn the pages to see what on earth was gonna happen at the end of every conversation as both got used to each other.
Also, as a side note, one thing I've noticed—with just two books under my belt—about Nicci Harris (or maybe just this series?) is that she tends to repeatedly overdo the smut... In my humble opinion! Sex is great and all, but idk, I don't think it's a requirement in every chapter at least.
All in all, it's a dark romance book that lives up to what the genre is all about with additional thriller/suspense influences.
Def gonna check the sequel just to see how Fawn's story ends (and how much Clay is whipped)!

I’m not sure why or how anyone can give this book a full 5 stars.
Although I vibed with the writing style, kudos, and even the spice, the main issue I had: poorly placed trigger warnings/themes, regardless of the “warnings”.
I love my dark theme romances, love them a lot, like any other dark romance girlie. But going through the 1 star rating reviews before writing my own, the author should be more transparent on what exactly is to come from the story. Graphic rape/noncon, pregnancy resulting from said rape, miscarriage.
Be upfront. Don’t simply pad it up with “severe trauma, taboo topics, heartbreaking loss”.

Fawn is pregnant and alone. Listening to the advice of her late mother, she searches for none other than Clay Butcher, mayor and mafia don.
Clay and Fawn may have a sizable age gap and a platonic arranged marriage between them, but that doesn’t stop them from falling.
