This was a well-written book with a cast of developed, complex characters. However, it ultimately fell flat for me. The ending is anticlimactic and the stakes prove to have been contrived. Mickey is ineffective as a police officer—both in crime prevention and investigation. She also never seems to grow, as one hopes a protagonist will. Instead, she never learns to truly empathize with and understand Kacey’s experiences.
I also felt the book’s political conclusions—Mickey’s “a few bad apples” approach to the police force, her treatment of Truman, and her attitudes toward Kacey and other addicts—were moderate and contributed to Mickey’s lack of development. I’m sure there are plenty of people who agree with those ideas, but I’m just not one of them.

Slow start. Too much time spent looking for Kacey. A lot of telling exposition through memories. Mickey kept making bad judgement calls left and right. And most of the book’s conflict was because everyone was lying.
I appreciated the dive into addiction and how it affects generations, but with the murder plot and the missing sister taking priority, it didn’t get the attention it deserved.
