Enjoyable but a bit confusing

I managed to slip into this story easily but found I wasn’t invested in the characters as I usually would’ve been for a book. This is my fist time reading this authors work. I like her writing style and her development of good characters and their story arcs is interesting but I didn’t feel invested in this story as much as I could have been.

I feel like I didn’t get to know a lot of the other characters intentions and reasonings, and everything felt a bit rushed in the story. It would have suited better to be a series, maybe 2 books? Either way though this was a good story, and enjoyable but I wanted more from it, which is the reason for the rating. I hope her other books are good!

I typically love dystopian novels, most of which tend to be YA these days. However I could not get into The Elites. I started and was interested by the premise, but felt like it never really got fleshed out - as another review noted I was told there was discrimination against "Reds" but never really saw it. And that was the biggest issue I had with this book, I was told a lot of things but wasn't really shown them.

I kept reading in hopes of getting hooked, and then finished the book out of sheer determination. It's a shame that I didn't like it, and I would definitely try something else by the author in the future, but the whole story just felt flat.

In Natasha Ngan’s debut novel we meet Silver, an Elite chosen to protect her country thanks to her superior DNA, who is faced with her most important task yet – protecting Neo-Babel’s president as he gives a speech. When Silver not only fails to complete her task but also recognises his assassin things take a turn for the worse. Soon her parents are mysteriously taken from the city and Silver, alongside life-long best friend and fellow Elite Butterfly, embarks on an adventure beyond the city’s limits desperate to be reunited with her family.

The story itself was full of action and felt to me like it could be well-suited to a cinematic adaptation. With a variety of characters ranging from the Elites to the Ghosts and the Pigeons; an anti-birthchip group, the world of Neo-Babel was certainly an intriguing world to fall into. Towards the end of the book the plot became even more action-packed with twists, turns, a little romance and many casualties; all of the ingredients for a great dystopian tale.

It has become increasingly difficult to find unique titles within the overcrowded YA dystopian genre however The Elites offers an unusual setting paired with an impressive writing style which together made for a refreshing read. Well-paced and packed with plenty of action The Elites is an enjoyable read for fans of the dystopian genre.

I honestly enjoyed this. I loved how the idea of the government doing chips to keep try out us was implemented. Except it wasn’t political which I loved. I also loved the switching third limited person POV’s . I’m all here for natural diversity. This definitely had it. I didn’t like how romance was just being pushed at you that was annoying especially more in the action packed scenes. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not a fan of romance and it felt forced. But I loved the action and how it character development was inputed . Especially we learn on how we’re raised affects how we go. But in the end I’m glad I finally tried their work and at this point I won’t be reading any more.
