Wow. Dr. Prince-Hughes' memoir about growing up and learning how to live in human society from her gorilla mentors is amazing and uncanny. Her book puts me, a reader, into a place where I have to see a piece of the world through thoughtful, caring gorilla eyes - where gorillas have more sense than humans do about how to accept (neuro)diverse folks.

Omaelämäkerrallinen kirja elämänkokemuksista ja tuntemuksista autismikirjolta. Dawn Prince-Hughes kuvaa lapsuuttaan, nuoruuttaa ja aikuisuuttaan tunnistaen poikkeavan suhtautumisensa ympäristöihin ja muihin ihmisiin (sosiaaliseen kanssakäymiseen ja kommunikointiin). Hän tunnistaa aistitoimintojensa poikkeavuuden, erityisen stressiherkkyyden ja kuormittumisen, kun päivät ja eläminen noin yleensä voi olla hankalaa, kaaosta ja hämmennystä. Luin tätä kasvutarinana. Erikoisesta tytöstä kasvaa nuori nainen, joka ajautuu syrjäytymiskierteeseen päihteiden käytön ja kodittomuuden myötä. Ja voi tätä lukea myös selviytymistarinana. Hän kuvaa vaikeutensa, mutta myös kuinka selviää niistä tai ainakin kuinka voi suhteuttaa itsensä haasteisiin, joita kohtaa. Hänen elämänsä muuttaa merkittävän syvällä tavalla kohtaaminen gorillan ja gorillojen kanssa eläintarhassa. Hän alkaa ymmärtää gorillojen kautta itseään ja paikkaansa maailmassa ja ihmisyhteisöissä.
Kirja toimi minulle vaikuttavana kuvauksena autismikirjosta ja kuinka se voi ilmetä tytöillä ja naisilla. Lisäksi sain paljon tietoa gorilloista, mikä oli kiva bonus lukemisen edetessä.
Hieman kompuroin kirjan suomennoksen kanssa. Välillä tuntui, että olisin lukenut englantia suomeksi. Harmitti paikoin myös, että autismi tai aspergerin oirehtymä mainittiin olevan sairaus (mitä se ei ole vaan neurobiologinen poikkeavuus). En tiedä johtuiko tämä sanavalinta käännöksestä vai oliko mukana alkuperäisessä englanninkielisessä tekstissä.

The topic of the book is interesting, and I appreciate the struggles the author went through. She is not the first person with autism to connect deeply with animals, and it’s lovely that she had so much opportunity to spend time with the gorillas. There is a missed opportunity to discuss how understanding the zoo staff were, as their jobs often center around making accommodations for individuals with different needs. I was disappointed to get to the end to be confronted with a “free all apes” message, given how important the zoo was in the author’s own journey.

(Entered info about the book on 7/21/21) I lost interest in finishing this book because I missed the book club where it was discussed and the feeling tone was "off." I know that had to do with the autism of the author but it was a problem for me when it came to reading it. Sigh. Sorry. I should do better.

Absorbing, honest, and insightful memoir of the author's journey coming to understand herself as autistic and to find meaning in her work and relationships. I was less interested in her perspective on gorillas, which was a challenge it's integral to her world view.

Memoir meets conservation with a touch of poetry. This book is really the author's journey with lots of information on how gorillas took part in that journey. Information on apes in captivity is included throughout, and bits of poems and journal entries. Not as informative on autism itself past the author's own experience, but still gives good insight.

This book was hard for me to read. With the author having autism, her thoughts and stories were not very linear and it was hard to follow at times. I wouldn't recommend it.
