Lots of great inspiration in this book. A better title should perhaps have been ‘The me God wants me to be’. I was particularly helped by the concept of flourishing in the flow of the Holy Spirit.
“God made you to flourish - to receive life from outside yourself, creating vitality within yourself, producing blessing beyond yourself. Flourishing is God’s gift and plan, and when you flourish you are in harmony with God, other people, creation and yourself.”

I didn't always connect with this book, and often felt it was lacking in depth. The language of "flow" as synonymous with being under the guidance of the Holy Spirit was also an adjustment; I felt as though John Ortberg was just another author creating terminology when new terminology was unnecessary. (akin to John Piper with Piper's language of "Christian hedonism.")
However, with that said, I found part 2 on the life of the mind the best section this book had to offer. This could have been due to my place in life and this chapter speaking to me for where I am currently. So take this with a grain of salt. But for that section alone, I am glad that I read the book. The last chapter on "Ask for a Mountain" was also memorable and a great end to the book. I'll give it 3 stars out of 5.

You know when you tell people "this book changed my life"? This is that book for me. I would recommend it to anyone trying to figure out their faith and who they are ment to be in Christ. If you feel like your not the best version of yourself, read this book. You'll understand that you can become the best version of yourself God intended for you to be. It's beautiful and candid and makes you feel like your not alone in your faith journey; Detours, setbacks, mistakes and all.

Recommended and given to me by a dear relation, I hope it's all I've been told. So far I'm disappointed that Ortberg doesn't credit Parker Palmer for similar insights presented in his book Let your Life Speak. Citation matters.

I appreciate Ortger's encouraging approach. His writing generally works to make a point but I was distracted by organization, wondering why random information or a certain quote got plunked in the text.

Great book to challenge, grow, think and reflect! Highly suggest to anyone trying to grow closer to God

I just can't seem to connect with Ortberg. I'm reading this with a group and find that the book does not lend itself to deep conversations. I'm Skimming the remaining chapters before group each week, and then will donate the book. This keeps happening with me and Ortberg, so I should have known better. There is just something about the way he handles his subject matter that bugs me.

"Ironically, becoming this person will never happen if my primary focus is on me, just as no one becomes happy if their main goal is to be happy. God made you to flourish, but flourishing never happens by looking out for "number one." It is tied to a grander and nobler vision. The world badly needs wise and flourishing human beings, and we are called to bring God's wisdom and glory to the world. The truth is, those who flourish always bring blessing to others -- and they can do so in the most unexpected and humble circumstances."

"Every once in a while you do something that surprises you and catch a glimpse of the person you were made to be. "

"Your flourishing self pours blessings into relationships. You find other people to be a source of wonder. They often bring you energy. When you are with them, you listen deeply. You are struck by their dreams. You bless. You are able to disclose your own thoughts and feelings in a way that invites openness in others. You quickly admit your errors, and you freely forgive."

""The me God made me to be" is measured by my capacity to love. When we live in love, we flourish. That is the dance."

"If peace is growing in me, I am less easily discouraged. If love is growing, I am less easily irritated."

"What I was really dying to was a false self, an illusion of misplaced pride, ego and neediness -- the me I thought I was supposed to be."

"The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. There is an enormous difference between following rules and following Jesus, because I can follow rules without cultivating the right heart."

If you are somewhat of a personality profile geek like I am, I think you'll really enjoy this book. If you've taken spiritual gifts inventories and still wonder what God is asking you to do in His kingdom, this may be something that can help you out. Hint: You can start by looking at yourself, but you can't stop there and eventually you need to give that up altogether.

I love Ortberg's books. He has a very conversational tone and addresses all manner of subjects - from more light-hearted to challenging - with humor and warmth. I don 't know if this book is really "amazing", but when I underline and learn and buy the book so I can refer to it and read it again (which I plan to do) and share passages with my husband and children and recommend it to friends and write down quotes in my journal so that I can meditate on them further, it is a 5-star book for me!

As others have mentioned, the "Monvee" website Ortberg refers to a few times in the book is disappointingly not available. But while the website seems as though it would have provided a useful tool, the book certainly stands alone and is a worthwhile read.

Highly recommended!

Very good book and reading. It filled my soul and made me look at things differently. Definitely a book I’ll revisit in the future.
