Okay so I love holiday romances (as long as I’m in the right mood to read them, that is… #MoodReaderProblems). This was a fun, fluffy holiday romance with some pretty dark bits (Daniel works at a Suicide prevention hotline, and there’s a slightly sensitive bit that happens in one scene… there is also a sexual assault — not a lot of details about the actual assault but the emotional aftermath was very well-described and hit me in the feels). I was invested in all of the characters, though, and this one was a very good nightmare antidote book to read before bed (minus those few parts but I happened to read those bits at other times so it was all good).

The most maudlin, saccharine piece of Christmas drivel I’ve ever read. I kept waiting for something to happen, but no, this book has no plot. It just has Sad Things Happening until they’re all miraculously resolved in the last twenty minutes for absolutely no good reason. This is billed as a romance but here’s what our leading man thinks of our leading lady:

“There was room for only one emotionally unstable woman in his life. And that woman was Kate.”

Ah, yes. ROMANCE.

This was the most depressing “Christmas” book I have ever read. Daniel’s sister dies, Kate has lost her husband, she and her son seem to be living at poverty level, her job is crap, her mother in law is on the verge of being kicked out of the elderly care facility she’s living in, Kate’s son has recently been tested and identified as having some learning and other difficulties requiring her to find a new school for him, she gets harassed at her company Christmas party, the list goes on and on. There’s very little joy in the book. I was never fully invested because everything seemed so entirely bleak. I never thought there was hope for these characters, so the intensity of the situations never affected me like you think they would.

I was looking for a book with light cheery non realistic romance. I guess my fault for not knowing what I was getting into. I listened to the audio and the book mostly centers on single mom Kate and her son’s problems. Financial problems, problems with school and work. The romance is last on the list. I wanted to feel merry at Christmas and this just wasn’t it.
