Picoult is just not for me. This the third one of hers I’ve tried. Years ago, I read the Amish one and I liked it but was vaguely annoyed by something in her tone. Then the next one— I don’t remember which one— had the same tone and by the end it had annoyed me to death. So I haven’t read any of the others.

But a friend told me about this one and it sounded intriguing and different so I thought I’d try again. Within 30 pages there was that tone again. I still can’t say exactly what it is that bugs me. (Is she condescending? Is that it?) So I skimmed and skipped and then slowed down and read the last 50 pages, and then there was that ending, which is the closest I think I've ever come to throwing my kindle across the room. I’m so glad I didn’t waste several days of reading time going through the whole thing, and that I had checked it out from the library instead of buying it. I can see why people like her books- she writes well, she can definitely wield a plot twist, and she is the master of taking on controversial topics - but I will not be trying another.

My god, this woman has done it AGAIN! I love Jodi Picoult I case that wasn’t blatantly obvious based on my first sentence. Her books NEVER fail to make me think about my own thought process and what I could be doing differently throughout life in general.

I absolutely loved the history here, the use of the story lines made me wonder totally whether the start of the book was going to turn into a massive twist. I don’t have words to clearly say how much I absolutely enjoyed this story.

Boring beginning. Long chapters. Maybe try again someday. Just didn't really hook me right away.
