Loved this graphic novel! It's like Call the Midwife meets The Count of Monte Cristo plus every orphan origin story you've ever loved.

Queen of the Sea is a great graphic novel. I enjoyed the story and the classic feel that it has. It is lightly based on Elizabeth 1 and her sister, Mary. We follow a girl who grows up on an island with nuns. We see her grow as a character. The way these character relationships change and develop over these pages. I enjoyed the way the royalty, religion, and government plays into this book. The art in the book is simple and have this classic art feeling that fits so well, I like the color tones and the vibe it puts off. However, I did find part of the story slow but I had fun reading it; finished it in one day.

I was given a copy, however, this is my 100% honest review.

Absolutely beautiful art and a solid well-developed narrative. It's clearly for younger audiences but it doesn't talk down to them and can still be engaging for older readers as well. A joy to look at, the art is not over-the-top or highly detailed, but it exudes such charm and life you can't help but stare. The attention to detail in terms of costuming and daily life was delightful, and I found myself immersed very quickly. The plot was fairly straightforward, but interesting enough to keep me engaged, it was very well-executed and I became quite fond of all the characters.
A thoroughly enjoyable read!

It's a moderately slow-paced book (especially at the beginning) that does a wonderful job at establishing characters and scenery. The personalities, motivations, and goals of each character is complicated— but the story does a great job at creating bonds between these characters in a way that is not only realistic to the story, but to the characters themselves.

The characters do experience growth throughout the story, but it's subtle; I really appreciate how the characters interact with one another, and how they challenge eachother's ideals.

Overall a great story about family, and the relationships that we build during hardship. The story tackles the idea of "necessary sacrifice, " making tough decisions with the hope of a better outcome for others. Each character is unique; though some are a little difficult to bear with at the beginning— they grow on you as the story progresses.

Would recommend this book to people who like the "historically-inspired" genre.

This was really lovely. The story uses the War of the Roses, particularly the drama of Henry VIII and his children, as a template for a great coming of age story. The illustrations are gorgeous.
