This story follows Rhya, a fae halfling who is one of four "Remnants" with elemental powers who, according to an ancient prophecy, are fated to restore the balance of magic in the land. Not a particularly fresh concept, but I was enjoying myself in the first 10% or so. Unfortunately, it lost me soon after. The plot and world didn't progress in an engaging way and the character and relationship development was much more "tell" than "show." And for such a romance-heavy book I felt very little chemistry between the two leads.
SpoilerI did not like Penn at all. My hypothesis is that the author is setting up a love triangle and Penn is not going to be endgame, but, regardless, I think their chemistry needed to be stronger in this book or Soren needed to have a more prominent role.

really interesting world building! plot meandered a bit through the middle and some sections felt info-dumpy but I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to book 2! the romantic tension was good, I think I struggle a little
to see the emotional connection but am very intrigued by the potential of the teased love triangle?!!!!? it’s giving CW teen drama (positive)
