“It came out of nowhere.”
This was such a bizarre and twisted creature feature. I’ll be honest in saying that, at times, I felt a bit lost in the plot.
As a reader, I felt I was just coming to terms with the shocking thing that happened to the main character Addy (who almost hit a vehicle and saw an unnerving man), when one.. two… three more strange things were thrown into the mix (Mads’ accident, the cave, the different types of creatures, the bodies, etc). This kept happening, and while it did lead to character growth as Addy fought to survive, there were no actual answers or real explanations to the events that occurred. Then, what Addy does finally at the end also confused me… like why are you wandering off into the snowy darkness with nothing to help you survive the elements?
This was totally a conundrum of a tale, because it was absolutely terrifying, but also extremely frustrating.

So, I wanted to like this novella. I really did try. It's tight and concise and was a good story... But while I absolutely feel the the story speaks to many, I was not at all the intended audience for this novel.
I always feel bad leaving a two star review for a book I enjoyed, and I did enjoy this... But it did feel like a sluggish nightmare world that flowed into weird territory after weirder plot twist, and then just ran out of road.
It felt like the horror aspect took a backseat to character development, but again the character in question wasn't created for me. Sympathize? Absolutely.
I feel like my strongest reactions to the main character were "Jesus, why on earth are you... okay that's an even worse choice but-" and after like six or so really bad choices in, I was ready for the main character to just get swallowed by the void.
It's worth the read though. Even if the character wasn't meant for me... I'd be tempted for more, because (no spoilers) it felt like a first step than resolved for my tastes.

A cute trucker does not a good book make.
This was an excellent, fast paced read, that was legitimately unsettling and scary.

LOVED IT! This is definitely a creature feature and lands fairly easily into the sub genre of weird fiction. It is written and told at a manic pace that makes you unable to resist turning the page.
It does have some ambiguity and questions that don't get answered because they are bigger than Addy's tale.
My only criticism would be there is a lack of description for the truck environment. The orientation seemed to shift and didn't make sense at one point to me.
However, this is a fantastic creature feature I plan to read again soon! Lots of fun!
