Laurel Hightower

3.66 AVERAGE

I was lucky enough to buy a copy of this book from Laurel herself at an event at the Stanley Hotel a few weeks ago. She's a wonderful person and it was great to meet her in person!

The following week, at the beach, I decided to read this book. As it turns out, reading this at the beach was quite an interesting choice on my part, given the book's setting!

This book packs all the punches, and starts out fast - I was immediately hooked. Despite sitting in the hot Florida sun, I truly *felt* the ice and snow that Addy experienced when she was trying to save Mads.

This is the kind of book where you kinda know where it's going the whole time, but you're still horrified thinking "don't do it, don't do it!" Honestly, it reminded me of watching horror movies when I was a kid - you know where it's going but you can't seem to tear your eyes away.

I highly recommend this bite-sized novella to all horror fans. Mothman anything is fun, but BELOW by Laurel Hightower is even better!

Character development was pretty good for such a short read. Left a lot to the imagination, which I enjoyed.

This was so dope. Looking forward to reading more Laurel Hightower.

Below is one of those odd stories that you think you’ve heard before and then it just goes in a completely unexpected direction. The writing is wonderful, the main character relatable, and there’s some really solid spooky scenes. I’m not sure I’m completely sold on the ending, but the trip there was fun.

I loved this beautiful little creature feature - I was creeped and spooked throughout most parts of it, even the ‘uneventful’ parts, but I loved the internal monologues and 3/4 person conversations. As mentioned in my Ward D review, I do enjoy the premise of a somewhat unreliable narrator as I enjoy the guesswork.

Mads’s ‘job’ has left me confused and the conversation with Parker, or why Grinner wanted everything to be a secret, like why were stomachs bulging out and was Parker even real? But as I said I do enjoy a good guessing game.

Great writing, great read and great meanings. 5*.

Left me with some really unsettling questions.

This novella kept me on the edge throughout. You can literally feel the panic and fear of Addy seeping into you. The man with the grin and the way he came out of nowhere hits you like a truck (pun-intended). Also, Addy was relatable countless number of times. The anxiety and the constant feeling of something sinister going on was well-done.
However, I do feel like thinks got repetitive at some points, and I wanted to know more about the ‘cargo’ carried by Mads, like it showed what it was but some more context would be better. Also, I loved how Addy made the decision at the end.
