I was somewhat conflicted about what to rate this book.

I did not enjoy the reading experience… and yet I can appreciate the author’s skill in capturing over 16 hours of my time (22 hour audiobook at 1.75 speed, with some replay when I got confused). Reading this book is like watching a car crash in slow motion and being unable to do anything about it.

All of the characters, including the narrator, are despicable people. Pathological liars, unrepentant drug & alcohol addicts, conceited rich snobs, true sociopaths. They act from the sole motivators of selfishness and self-protection, frequently to the detriment of others and rarely receiving any consequences (except the slow mental anguish that drives several of them to madness). I kept waiting for a moment of repentance and justice… but nope.

Like a Greek tragedy… but if Charles Dickens was paid by the word to write it.

This book has a way of keeping such a steady pace through the whole story that unsettled me at certain parts. In the best way.

I worried that the length would exhaust me, but the book doesn't feel as plot dense as it looks. I don't feel exhausted and never did at any point. More intrigued and compelled to continue.

Would recommend for the dark academia, creepy vibe. I totally fell into the madness with the characters and I hope you do too.

Though it is considered a "dark academia" book by social media, I feel you'll get more out of the book going into it without that expectation.
Tartt's writing style is amazing and paired with the medium pacing, you feel continually engrossed by the story. It always feels like something is going on in the plot. The characters in the greek class are enigmatic, complex, and (some are) not always the most likable. Richard's (unreliable) narration gives you a partially romanticized view of the events and characters which makes the thought process when reading even more interesting.
I would highly recommend picking up this book if you're considering it, as it was truly a phenomenal read.
