Defiant

Charged with rescuing the niece of his hated commander, Major Connor MacKinnon, leader of the infamous MacKinnon’s Rangers, soon discovers that the only way of saving Lady Sarah Woodville from her Shawnee captors is to fight her abductor and claim her himself. In doing so, Connor and Sarah place themselves on a headlong collision with her dangerous uncle, a man with the power to destroy them both...

Series note: This is the third and final installment in Clare’s MacKinnon’s Rangers series. The first book Surrender is one of the best historical romances I’ve ever read (my review). Unfortunately, book #2, although well-written, is something of a disappointment due to the lack of chemistry between the main characters. Thankfully, Defiant comes close to the perfection of book #1.

Clare’s descriptions of the setting are beautifully rendered and immersing, and her character development is incredible. Connor goes from a rather impetuous, angry and rash young man at the beginning of the series to a thoughtful lover, courageous leader and honorable man. Sarah is sweet, loving and loyal with an extraordinary spirit and strength of will that enables her to not only survive the hardships of Colonial America but thrive as well. Connor and Sarah’s romance is physically intense and emotionally satisfying.

The secondary characters are wonderful, Joseph in particular plays an important role in the story and holds a special place in my heart, and Wentworth is the type of villain that simply screams for redemption. Hopefully both will receive books of their own sometime in the near future.

All in all, a wonderful conclusion to the series so far and my one small nitpick is that the ending could have been tighter and less drawn out.

Connor MacKinnon must rescue the niece of his nemesis, captured by Indians during the French and Indian wars. Lady Sarah Woodville has to choose between marrying Connor in an Indian ceremony or becoming a slave to her captor. However, she must forget that marriage once she's back in civilization and hide it from her uncle, the British commander William Wentworth. Of course, things don't go the way they wish.
This is a beautiful conclusion to this series about a historical period not often utilized in historical romances. Ms. Clare has done her research and peppers the story with interesting facts and events. Connor and Sarah are a wonderful couple and fit in well with the rest of the MacKinnons. There are some steamy scenes, but I read for the story, wanting to see what happened next.
I highly recommend this series. It's very well-written and I enjoyed it extremely.

Read It File It (Short Review): OMG I adored this whole series but Defiant by Pamela Clare just raised the bar on early American Historical Romance (which there needs to be more of IMHO). I read it in one evening (staying up late to finish it) and when I closed the last page I immediately looked to see if there was any more coming (there is a novella out there that gives you updates on everyone). Just a downright awesome read!

PS: I don't think there are any more after the novella. That being said this was a complete series: all 3 brothers. Just, as I am want to do, I wanted some of the side characters to have stories too.

Pamela Clare really knows her history. She based her story off of Roger's Rangers who really existed. She changed things around and made them the MacKinnon Rangers instead.

This was the final book in the series. I believe there is a Christmas novels too which I might read but I still wish she would have written a book dedicated to Joseph, the MacKinnon’s Mahican friend. I was madly in love with him.

This story was about the youngest brother, Connor. He's the only brother left serving in the Rangers. He is their new leader. When the Brigadier General’s niece gets abducted by a group of Shawnee, he sends Connor and Joseph after her to get her back.

Sarah was noble born. In fact, she is the king's great granddaughter. A scandal makes her parents send her from London to the Americas. On her way to Albany to visit her uncle, she and the people she is with get attacked. She is taken by a warrior named Katakwa who is bent on avenging the murder of his wife. He leads her by a rope through the forest. Sarah has no idea what will happen to her.

She goes through a horrible ordeal yet she handles it bravely. At first, I was a little annoyed with her placing such a high value on her virtue but given the era and how she was raised, I could understand it. I just thought if there's a choice between death or giving up my virtue, it would be a no brainer.

This story was emotional right up to the end.

I didn't want the series to end.
