I think my expectation from this book was more because I had heard a lot about it. I did not get scared and its not a horror story either. The genre is creepy horror if you will. The what and hows of the main problem created by the aliens was not graspable by me atleast. And I felt it was a but slow
It had its moments but all in all not a higher Stephen King novel

I would have DNFd this except I want to read all of King’s work. But I hated this, I skimmed the last couple hundred pages. I probably missed things because of doing that but I really don’t give a crap
Look, I'm not a super "high-brow" literature dink. I know what I'm getting into when I pick up a King novel. Basically, I want to be entertained. And this particular book had a lot of farts and aliens busting out of people's assholes. I was super excited.
Until about, I don't know, somewhere around page 150 when King really starts to get into the history of Dudditz.
So basically, the 4 main shitdick protagonists who are all like, mildly psychic thirtysomething dudes going through boring crises in their lives, are on an annual boys hunting trip. A series of events happens and they begin to get menaced by anal aliens. Cool. I hope they all die.
They also have this mysterious fifth friend who was "the best thing" about them, and that they desperately cling to as validation that they are "good people" when really they're fucking assholes.
Eventually it's explained that Dudditz (Douglas) was a kid with Down's Syndrome and they find 3 bigger teenagers bullying him in an abandoned lot, having stripped the kid down and attempted to force-feed him dog shit. Lovely. Anyway, the four little shitdicks somehow sack up and confront the dudes, threaten to tell on them, and the bully guys leave. They help Dudditz get dressed and take him home, where of course there is teary-eyed gratefulness from his parents at the self-sacrifice these boys have gone to to save their beloved son, and then they decide to befriend Dudditz, which actually means essentially adopt him as a slightly amusing pet and let him play cribbage with them.
Nauseating.
So the novel is literally four assholes desperately clinging to that one time they helped a kid with Down's Syndrome so they MUST be good people.
Ugh. I stopped reading. I hope all the characters die, except Dudditz.
I have seen the movie adaptation and it's hilariously bad, and I was hoping for less of this self-aggrandizing bullshit and more butt aliens. The one star is for the butt aliens and immense farts. If King can be that creative with describing fart noises, he sure as hell could've made a less condescending caricature of a person with Down's. I mean come on.
Anyway, don't bother with this. Okay maybe bother with like the first 100 pages or so when the ass aliens are just starting to make an appearance and half-toothless people are farting like crazy and bleeding out their asses.
Then put it down and walk away.

As frightening as anything he's ever written

Not one of King's strongest. I didn't quite hate it as much as I did The Tommyknockers, but I have pretty much decided I don't enjoy it when King writes about aliens.
2 out of 5 stars.

Definitely a strange book in King's wide variety of topics. The human-nature part of the book is great, the other parts... are very odd.
I really liked this book.
I’d recommend starting with the SSDD chapter. It’s not the start of the story but gives you background on some of the characters.
The first character it covers is kinda hard to follow but it feels on purpose and once the others are covered it makes more sense.
The story definitely starts off slow but once you get past the beginning it really picks up.
There are multiple parts of the story mentioned really nonchalantly that don’t make sense but they get explained eventually.
Overall this book definitely has its ups and downs but it’s interesting throughout.
I feel like this book could be a hundred or so pages shorter but I’d still recommend it.
