This book is good. And then it's sequel, which is actually the second half of the book, is not very good. Awesome premise and cool worldbuilding.

I was really excited to read this book. It seemed like it was right up my alley: an urban fantasy set in Africa. The pros were the different setting and my this that Okungbowa brought to life - it is so different from most of the UF I read. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough to keep my focus. The terrible editing and flow of the book made it difficult to read and digest. Sentences like “….knock him down stat.” and “The kind of diplomatic discussion we’re going to be having, we need the coolest heads ever.” just ruined the whole flow of the scene.

I wanted to like this book but sadly it isn’t one I would generally recommend to people outside of the setting and different mythos. I do love to see a BIPOC Urban Fantasy, and while this one wasn’t my favorite I hope there will be more like it in the future.

I wanted to love this and really thought I would. The setting, the premise, even the cover told me that I would love this book, that it would be something unique and beautiful. And it just wasn't anything special. The plot, the 'twists', the characters - all pretty standard, unsurprising, and at times, painfully predictable.

Oh no! Our hero has been captured! How ever will he get out of this one?! Will he use his wits or his superpowers or - oh...his friends show up at the last minute and rescue him? Ah, okay. Oh no, he's captured again! Will he - friends show up in the nick of time again? Oh. Well.

The story tortuously drags on, bouncing around from location to location, battle to battle, in a jerky and yet tedious fashion, never pausing to make us fall in love with the characters or the world. I managed to power through the whole thing, but I really didn't want to. One thing that really annoyed me is that some of the characters *sometimes* speak in some sort of dialect that's not easy to decipher and we're not always given context to understand what they're trying to say. That's not a deal breaker, but the inconsistency is. The same character will switch back and forth, randomly from scene to scene, sometimes even *within* a scene. Worse, the freaking narrator did this occasionally WITHIN the narrative. I'd give it one star, but that feels just plain mean. The author made a valiant attempt and had some good ideas, so I applaud his efforts and hope he keeps honing his skills. I just won't know if he does because I really don't want to read another one.
medium-paced

This book was really hyped up and I was excited to check it out. It was a fun adventure, with an unusual twist on gods - in this world they were a nuisance to be chased around by a godhunter. The protagonist is highly irreverent, and ambivalent about the hero's journey he is called to embark on. This cavalier attitude came to be a little grating as the story went on, especially in the second half of the book.

Very tight narrative. Altogether very good.

holy hell. see now i don't read a lot of fantasy books because the world building does my head in but urban fantasy is my jam. this one is amazing. i don't know which other word to use to describe it. Suyi Davis is amazing. I'm utterly in awe of the way he uses words. mixes English and pidgin and yoruba in such a flawless way that fully encompasses the reality that we live in, a mixing of languages and cultures. and post-apocalyptic too. honestly, this book is so so good.
