This was such a frustrating read, nothing author or writing related but the actual story/plot and the main FMC! She wasn’t likable, given her dealing with abandonment issues I was annoyed with the way she wasn’t honest with Theo. Theo was nothing but honest and open such her. She didn’t deserve him….PERIOD.
lighthearted medium-paced

I inhaled this book. I think it is because, as the book itself notes, it is like a teen drama on the CW. The MCs feel a little immature but also relatable. The author crammed a lot of melodrama into the book, but I enjoyed it. Also- the grand gestures were amazing and the FMC is a librarian.

Super cute, enjoyable read. Not sure if I'll read the next one or not, but this one was fun.

A solid debut by this author with some lovely moments and some hiccups.

This book kind of felt like my best friends wedding except the best friend is actually an asshole and she falls for his brother instead.

Marcela has been in love with her best friend Ben for years. Since they dated and he told her they were better off as just friends. When Ben gets engaged to Alice his brother Theo (ex NFL players, but it's not really relevant as he's retired now) shows up and admits to Marcela that he's also in love with Alice.

It's super soap opera-y and entertaining the writing is fast paced and easy to follow.

It's got some issues in that there is a lot of repetition and the FMC goes back and forth on her feelings A LOT. Too much. It also felt weird that the one character kind of holding everyone hostage just becomes a villain and there is no wrap up of that relationship by the end. It felt disjointed and weird.

Overall it's cute. But just ok.

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for this review!

A fun addition to the collection of Fake-Dating and FWBs-to-Lovers books. I liked the character connections between the two leads. In addition to their shared experience of pining for someone who is taken they both contend with body-issues that are thoughtfully well-written by Gamez: Marcela’s insecurities about her weight is matched by Theo’s feelings that his own body has failed him/lost value as his injury forced him out of the NFL.

My one dissatisfaction with the book was the characters ages didn’t quite line up. All of them being roughly 26-28ish seemed right for being in the place in life to get engaged, retire from pro sports, or have their own apartment in San Antonio. But, everyone’s emotional maturity and coping strategies felt more like the response of someone fresh out of college.
