Love the characters. Love the premise. Love the new take on a wizard story. Had to rereador after I saw that Fuckbois of Literature had a podcast. Wanted to listen but didn't want to "spoil" the reread. Now I can read the sequel also.

Carry On is set in the fictional world described in "Fangirl" (which I have not read). It is excellent Harry Potter fan fiction with it's own twist. The plot is good, and the conflict is resolved by the end (even though it is the first in a series). I liked the characters and the dynamics between them. The dialogue was good, the writing worked well.
I would definitely read the next installment for the Simon/Baz moments.

It was a good book, just not my top favourite.
I loved fangirl so was excited to pick this up, but I didn't live it as much. It was still good and I'll probably read the rest of the series but I'm not hurrying out to read it ASAP.

the first half was super slow as the world and seven years of school were built, and the humdrum resolution was exceedingly obvious, but i’m living for the simon+baz ship

This was a fun book and I like the characters and seeing how they change in the story.

I absolutely loved this book!!!! Simon and Baz and Penny are gems and such cool characters and I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS! I wish this was a full fledges series because I am actually distraught at the fact that I cannot read more about their adventures. I don't want to write a full on review because I am lazy, but READ THIS BOOK!

Adored the fact that it was a parody of Harry Potter but could still stand on its own. The magic system was so interesting!! I loved how the spells were taken from common Normal phrases, and that for their thesis, students at Watford had to create their own spells. Genius.

There were so many Harry Potter references, and it was fantastic. Don’t get me wrong, if you haven’t read Harry Potter, you can still really enjoy Carry On, but for a Harry Potter lover, the references were like candy. ESPECIALLY THE MAGE. Not gonna divulge what I mean by that but omg

At least to me, this book read like a contemporary disguised as a fantasy, and I LOVED IT. This is partially because Watford actually uses technology (unlike Hogwarts lol), and the Mage encourages everyone to stay up to date on Normal culture. All the teens talk like teens at my high school, except for some of their curses (“Crowley!”).

Carry On had a really unique feel to it, one that I can only liken to the Princess Bride, if anything, and it was so enjoyable. Again, it read like a contemporary but also a fantasy, a Harry Potter parody, but also it’s own fantastic story. For the most part, I couldn’t put it down.

The humor in this was great, and there were some really touching, profound moments. I really enjoyed the characters. Simon is such a cinnamon roll. Penelope is kick-ass. Their friendship and Penelope’s loyalty is everything. Wish we got to see more of Natasha Grimm-Pitch and Lucy and Davy and young Fiona. We should really just have a Carry On prequel!

Overall, it was a great story. do think there were some problematic elements though. Baz for example is NOT mentally sound, and I can’t believe no one really talks about it. Literally that whole scene in the burning forest was such an issue; Baz seems to be leaning on Snow as a crutch. Also, you can just tell that this book wasn’t written by someone on the LGBT spectrum. I’m all for inclusive literature, no matter who writes it, but it seemed like Rowell was intent on the fact that there’s gay and straight and no in between. Tbh it would’ve been cool if Simon gave the literary world some bi rep.

Also, not gonna lie. There should’ve been more kissing. Whyy was there not more kissing when this is a Rainbow Rowell book. And the beginning dragged a bit, but that’s just a nit picky comment.

Honestly, I picked this book up because I wanted a canon Drarry, and I got that, but I got a whole lot more. Would definitely give it a shot if you’re thinking about it. It’d definitely appeal to a wide variety of readers!

i hate how embarrassed i am about enjoying this but HOLY HELL did i enjoy this. not to beat a dead horse, but it truly is everything i love about Harry Potter while also addressing things HP (read: JKR) neglected. like, hello, let's talk about the trauma that comes with being a Chosen One!!!! give me all of the working through trauma in YA fiction!!! give me all the Chosen Ones going to therapy!!!! the worldbuilding was a little mediocre, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story at all. as the back cover said, i came for the makeouts and stayed for the magic. i've had my issues with Rainbow Rowell the past (she really doesn't know how to write asian characters, or any characters of color for that matter), but this feels like a marked improvement compared to her other work. i am so happy i gave this book a chance.
this is a little incoherent because i literally just finished the book and am feeling the post-story high, but wow i loved this so so so so SO much.
tl;dr: i would die for simon snow. my heart is so full
