Wow. Hafsah Faizal definitely grew a lot from writing the Sands of Arawiya series to writing this book. It’s definitely one of her best works yet. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and found the plot enticing, as well as the characters. I loved Arthie, Flick, and most of all, Jin. Having the  multiple perspectives was definitely a good idea. I can’t wait for A Steeping of Blood!

So much fun here!  This is a vampire novel with vampires that feel different from other similar titles, but they aren't so similar as to feel like they aren't really vampires any more.  I also liked the characters fairly well, though I found them a little to idealistic to really resonate with me.  Similarly, I loved the messaging about colonialism, but it sometimes felt a little to overt when the situations and plot of the story made it so clear.  I didn't need a character to tell me that colonialism is horrible when every aspect of the story is doing a good job of showing me that same fact.  Despite these issues, the book was very enjoyable, and I will not hesitate to pick up the second book when it releases.

The only thing I liked was the characters. There was potential, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I was disappointed because, although I think this author writes well, I never connect with her stories.
It was only the cliffhanger ending that made me consider reading the next book in the series.
