4.5/5 stars!
Honestly, when is goodreads going to start doing half star reviews?! This book was so romantic and so emotional. I love romance books that aren’t just about the romance but there’s also a lot of subplots going on as well. I found the parts of her brother being missing very interesting. I really wanted to know the outcome of her brother in the hope that he would survive. What I found was also quite exciting how was Edward going to find out that Cecilia wasn’t actually his wife?I kept waiting for the bomb to drop the whole time.
This book was definitely more interesting than some of the other books that’s written by Julia Quinn. It wasn’t just a typical English ballroom romance. It was set in New York during a war. It was a little bit more gritty than the others. Definitely the best part about the book obviously was Edward and Cecilia‘s relationship how it seemed that it stemmed from a lie but originally from the letters that she wrote to her brother, how Edward and Cecelia secretly pined for each other, even without knowing each other.
The ending genuinely made me feel extremely emotional and definitely the revelation about her brother made me very emotional that I actually started crying! This book really really moved me. I do think sometimes there is a lot of opportunity for more drama like originally with her evil cousin. I really wish he had more to do with the story. I do like a good villain. It makes everything a little bit more enticing. No spoilers, but there’s something about her brother which I really wish Julia Quinn explored more but they didn’t. I feel like some of the book could’ve been a bit more exciting and that’s why it was a four point five for me there is a lot more drama that could’ve happened, but the book seem to just kind of go straight and narrow route instead.

Short and sweet review for a short and sweet book.
Actually, the book was 375 pages which isn’t really short, but it FELT short because I zoomed right through it. I’m not taking back my phrasing.
So this is a book about a lady who travels to Revolutionary America to search for her missing brother (a British soldier), and encounters his best friend instead, who is in a coma. When they won’t let her in to see him, she claims to be his wife, and then nurses him back to health. When he wakes up, he has no memory of the last few months, and here’s this lady who is claiming to be his wife. Whoops! (I did have to suspend quite a bit of disbelief here, but it helps that the two have been corresponding for over a year, taking on messages to each other through her brother.)
“Sweet” is really the best thing I can say about this book. It takes a couple of tropes and doesn’t really do anything new with them, just retreads them in a comforting manner, but Cecilia and Edward felt like real people, and they had some lovely moments both together and apart (it felt like such a human reaction when Edward was so grateful for the comfort Cecilia provided him while he was ill, and that her face was the first he saw when woke up).
I would have liked a little more “oomph,” though.
Super here for the next one, because shipboard romance with a dash of pirate for seasoning is a thing I have loved since I snuck my mom’s copy of Gentle Rogue out of her bedside table in middle school.
