It's always fun to find an American historical, and this was made even more interesting by being focused on the British side of the Revolutionary War. There isn't much focus on the conflict itself, but there are mentions of fighting and the changes that have been wrought on New York (Town) over the years. As a resident of NYC, it was especially fun to read about places I go to daily and have lived before, and to picture these islands before they were filled with steel and glass.

While the inter-character conflict here does rely on the characters not telling each other important things, there are enough other factors that it makes sense for Cecilia and Edward to withhold information from each other with the best of intentions. There's a lot of humor in their relationship, and I liked that it was built on letters exchanged over a period of years - the idea that it would take three months to complete a single exchange is mind-boggling when you're used to texting someone and expecting an instant reply.

The book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, but solely to do with the hero of the sequel (I presume). There's also an off-screen marriage between two secondary characters, one of whom is a Bridgerton, but I haven't read any of those books to know if their relationship takes place in another novel.

ETA: Well, duh! I thought this was the first book in the series, but it's really the second and the first one details the relationship I was asking about above.

i love edward and cecila <3

Slow and hard to read

Silly cheesy romance. I feel like I've ready this before, but I'm sure I haven't. It felt really familiar, though.

Love how Quinn writes such sassy characters!

Fake Dating storylines are only fun if both people are aware of the fakeness. I couldn't keep reading this, it was too cringy.

4.5 stars. this was my FAVORITE ROMANCE NOVEL PERHAPS EVER! oh my goodness. my romance novel romance empire. first of all i want to simply laugh at how silly the other reviews of this book are - especially the one that goes on and on about how cecilia is a liar and edward deserves sooo much better. FINALLY a romance novel of this genre that has a more complex female main character - and the funny thing is that cecilia LIED for good and honorable reasons, but accidentally worked herself into such a mess that she couldn’t quite figure out how to get herself out of it. i enjoyed this even more than the bridgerton novels (and it has such better prose that, please excuse me miss julia quinn, i wondered at times if it was the same author). cecilia and edward had such delicious chemistry. and it was such a good plot, though definitely slower in the beginning and middle - very much picked up towards the end. the one thing is that i wish the pacing had been more consistent and the story around thomas had been more clear. i also loved that edward was not a perfect mmc and at times had too much pride and temper. this was just overall such a good read, their first kiss (and first ykwhat) had me GIGGLING and giddy and kicking my feet. cecilia and edward i love u SO SO MUCH!!!!

Independence War era love story with some deception. Cecilia makes some deceitful decisions. Overall, I did enjoy the characters in story.
