Oh my god. Oh my god. Let’s talk about this:

First of all: 4.75 stars. So close to 5 stars, but I didn’t really like the change in narration for random chapters/episodes. I think I would’ve preferred a consistent, omnipotent narrator as opposed to switching the narration to the relevant characters’ voices. Some of them were not very interesting.

HOWEVER: wow wow wow this was amazing. I loved the writing style, I loved the dramatization, I loved the borrowed characters from other universes. The whole thing was just amazing. Definitely a new favourite.

I think “The Sound of Her Wings” and “Facade” were my favourite chapters, even though I just said I didn’t like the characters becoming the narrators. BUT I DON’T EVEN CARE THAT CHAPTER WAS SO GOOD.

The main sibling characters (Dream, Death, etc) were incredibly well fleshed out, and even when the content of the story changed from chapter to chapter, they all still felt very connected by Morpheus intertwining himself in each new character’s stories throughout history (either literally showing up, or being spoken of through storytelling like in the chapter “Tales in the Sand”).

Holy crap. Listen to this audiobook. Right now.

I wanted to love this; the cast is incredible, and the performance is undeniably well done. But it was utterly terrible. And this comes from someone who truly *loves* some of Gaiman's works, especially The Ocean at the End of the Lane. But everything I hated about American Gods was present here too, only magnified. Disturbing content can serve a purpose, and if the book has redeeming qualities, I'm willing to put up with a lot, but there was just...nothing here redemptive. The plot was tangled and a bit confusing, and later parts of the book were mostly disconnected from the larger story arc. We didn't stay with any characters long enough for me to care much about them before we were on to someone else, usually someone despicable. It takes a lot to make humanity worse than they are in reality, but Gaiman does so with a level of gusto that makes me wonder about his mental state. The glimpses of the signature Gaiman creativity were just depressing because there was no payoff. How this managed to be so gross and so boring at the same time was beyond me; McAvoy is stellar as a voice actor but everytime I would start to get into it, someone else would get murdered with just horrendous squelchy sounds and screams. Two stars instead of one because of the performances, but I loathed this story.

Insanely good. The casting was superb, the voice acting was perfection. My absolute favorite graphic novel series is brought to amazing life. The Sound of Her Wings is still one of my favorites and the way it was done for the audio was beautiful.

A confession: I've never read The Sandman comics.

I was very much aware of them. [a:Neil Gaiman|1221698|Neil Gaiman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1234150163p2/1221698.jpg] is one of my favorite authors. I've been entranced by many of his stories. I also enjoy comics! I've just never...got around to them, I guess? I really have no excuse.

So, out of Audible credits in August, I noticed that the first part of the Sandman audio adaptation was available as part of my subscription and I immediately downloaded it. It has some amazing cast members, and of course the whimsical voice of the author himself as the narrator (if you haven't listened to Neil Gaiman read some of his own stories, it is a treat!).

I loved the episodic nature of the audiodrama. I was pulled into the universe immediately, and the voice acting of all involved is excellent. The stories are wonderfully illustrated by the actions of the characters, their dialogue, and the narrator's input. I love the adaptation.

My only critique would have to be the sound effects and music. Obviously, they add a whole other layer to storytelling. They fit right in. However (and this could completely be my settings on my devices), every background noise or score was very bassy or overly loud and sometimes made it hard to hear the dialogue. It could have been dialed back just a smidge.

So 4 stars on Goodreads for a delightfully imaginative story from the Master Neil Gaiman and the experience of listening to it instead of reading the comics. I'm excited for Part II!
