I don’t get how this is considered slow burn. I’ve been seeing all these TikTok Romantasy recs calling things slow burn, but none of them seem to be. Like *The Coven*—the guy’s already acting jealous from the first day they meet, growling at anyone who comes near. He says things like, “I don’t know what this witching awakens in me, something I haven’t felt in hundreds of years.” Did the definition of insta-love change while I was away from the romance world?
Okay, rant over. Sorry about that.
I read about 40% of the book, but I just couldn’t get into it. The romance felt more insta-love than slow burn, and there was a lot of telling through the characters' inner thoughts to explain the mechanics of the world. Wich ot’s fine, but it was a lot. And I was still confused most of the time.
The “as you know...” dialogues, where the characters explain things to each other that they already know, just for the sake of the reader, was quite on the nose and felt lazy.
It’s just not for me, unfortunately. I really wanted to love it.

I can't decide if this is a 3.5 or 4 star, but I did really enjoy this! It's dark and spooky which I wanted for spooky season. I saw most of the "twist" coming but I don't care because I loved it!
The main character is pretty badass and I like that she has the chops so her actions can back up her threats. I also like how magic is portrayed and how she has been taught the ways of old magic vs what the current students are learning. Also, SHE IS NOT 16. I saw so many comments saying this book is gross because she is 16.... she's not 16... it explains that in detail multiple times. Maybe you should focus on your reading comprehension instead of giving one-star reviews to a book when you can obviously barely read. I digress, this story is not perfect (or this would be a 5-star review) but it is good, it focuses on witches and demons which I'm a big fan of, and ultimately it's a fairly fast-paced and fun read.

While I enjoyed the read/ listen, I felt like the plot moved more quickly than the development and I didn’t really get to know the characters before things happened to them.

I thought that The Coven by Harper L Woods was going to be a typical supernature romance. Not in a bad way but a familar way. In this case, a story about a witch falling in love with a vampire. A forbidden love that an opposing forces seek to seperate. Boy was I wrong. This story is more complex than I imagined. Willow and Gray have amazing chemistry. Her backstory is lush and rich. A bloodline of witches belonging to a large coven. Witches with connections to the earth. Willow does not listen to her ancestor who makes it clear that she has a path she must follow like the others in her line. She ignores the idea of not pursuing the Vessel who is really hot. Woods doesn’t even have to full describe this guy. He’s hot.
I thought I understood exactly who Gray is. I made the mistake of thinking that he was nothing more than a pawn in this game. Thinking that things would be cut and dry is my mistake. Once the truth was revealed about Willow, I was floored. I still am as I write this review. That plot twist truly made everything click and made me question why I didn’t figure it out sooner.
I’m rating this novel four out of five stars. Can’t wait to read the next book.

This is too far down the dark romance slider for me. The power and consent dynamics just feel…icky, and there isn’t even much of a romance happening yet.
