Just don’t waste your time. I was uncomfortable the entire time, it was disgusting… this is not how you write smut, I swear it feels like this was written by a man with an underage girl fetish. The plot was missing so much and it had the potential but it just didn’t make sense, so many things missing. It was inconsistent, gross and just not for me

Can I coin the term "necromantasy" as a new genre? Because The Coven fits right in.

I flew through this book in a couple days despite the fact the word "growl" appears 37 times. There's a lot of growling going on with these characters.

Willow is a witch who has been raised with one objective - to find the bones of her murdered aunt and use the magic from those bones to bring down the skeleton and vampire bad guys.

Shenanigans in the form of vessels, forest monsters, witch bullies, and a string of secrets and murders makes Willow question everything she knows, and everyone around her. Who can she trust? Will she find the bones? Will she ever stop to question the motives of her terrible father?

The culmination of everything that happens in the last few chapters was a bit predictable, but I was still thoroughly entertained and can't wait for The Cursed.

Crossing my fingers there's more necromancy to come...

Okay… well that was dark and intense. The romance is incredibly toxic. These two are clearly unwell and could benefit from intense therapy. Maybe even couples therapy. He’s the headmaster of her school and has an unhealthy obsession with her which is slightly off-putting (he’s like a million years old and she’s 20!?!? ok) but it ends up not mattering. I think he’s a demon or something but trapped inside a non-human (but still human looking?!) form that exclusively feeds on witch blood. Not really sure about all that but that doesn’t actually matter either. He is the literal definition of morally grey, and his name is fittingly, Gray (I’m not kidding). I’m also not quite sure what happened in the middle of the book but people die and plants grow and then some wild satanic sacrifice happens. The ending left me like:

All fantasy writers should note the brilliance and appeal of this novel’s introductory chapters: a protagonist sassily defying an established world figure, an impressive fight scene solidifying the magic system and power scale, and a mysterious mission with greater, underlying implications.

However, there was little elaboration on any subject aside from the uncomfortable romance I was convinced was occurring between an underage teenager (now confirmed to be 20 after conducting outside research) and an immortal being. Where was the exploration of dark academia? What importance do the other twelve lineages possess? How can living relatives be so vital and yet so ignored? A disturbing, weak romance did not deserve the forte of attention it received when the synopsis promised a rich, inter-dependent realm of magical education, familial connections and 400+ years of historical drama.

Wow. Loved the lore and world building, this was an amazingly fast read for me. Loved the female MC and also the male MC, absolutely love an actual villain. Absolutely cannot wait for the next book.

Very high 4.5 stars
This was so good. Way better than I anticipated it being, not that I didn't think it would be good, but I'm trying to be better at not putting books on a pedestal so I don't end up disappointed. What a pleasant surprise. I loved the magic in this, the way Willow is described and the way she respects nature and uses her magic for good, to help nature. So beautifully described. The cliffhanger on this though is huge, I kind of immediately want to go into the next one.

I will say, was immersion reading with this book (following along with the physical whilst listening to the audio). I assume this book has been picked up by a traditional publisher. With the release date being October 2024. However, the audiobook release date is April 2023 and it appears to miss entire chunks out of the book. Which did slow me down somewhat when reading this because I had to keep pausing and reading the 3 pages that were missed. I assume an update audiobook will come in time, but just as a heads up, this one does not line up with the current release of this book.
