Road trip audiobook. Really enjoyed this book until the final 25%. Then Renee made some decisions and moves that made no sense at all. Really like that Harry Bosch is a part of this series. Having Titus Welliver read the Harry parts was a real plus. He is so good. His parts didn’t sound at all like he was reading, He was the part. Renee is no longer living out of her car or tent on the beach. She is now in a condo. She is still on the late shift since she likes being alone. Two cases happen during her shift that she remains involved with, the Midnight men, (team of rapist) and the death of a former gang member gone straight on NYE who was shot in the head during fireworks celebration. The murder turns out to be associated with an unsolved case Harry had worked years earlier, same gun. This brings Harry in to help Renee. Renee is not in good standing with her LT or Captain and some of the praise/scolding yoyo by them is frustrating. Over all it was a good listen and I can overlook that only a small portion of the book went rogue. Michael Connelly is usually a good bet.

Renée Ballard is complaining that her fellow cops at the LAPD are jaded, tired, and not interested in actually solving crimes. While at first she works within the system to solve the crimes she's in charge of investigating, she then decides to quit and go rogue like some vigilante. Though she had been unfairly sanctioned earlier in the book, the book ends with an offer to come back to the force.

I was liking the story, but ultimately this potentially four-star read became a three star read not just for the reasons listed above, but also for the fact that the author did not take a consistent position on Covid-19. Ballard herself wears a mask--Connelly makes a point of including when she dons one--and refuses to get close to people who aren't wearing one. However, when she's with unvaccinated Bosch she tells him she has antibodies because she's already had Covid.

This is one of Connelly's best. Tightly woven, sensitively written. I have a harder time with the way Ballard was flaunting the rules than the ways that Bosch did, but I am definitely intrigued to see what direction she goes from here.

Loved this book so much! The coolest part for me, is that Bosch isn't going to be around forever (already dreading the day!) But Ballard is a bad ass too!! Caught the damn midnight men, and put away the people who killed the mechanic guy on new year's eve. She's super rad! :)

This is the book where Ballard really comes into her own. She and Harry are cut from the same cloth, seeking justice for victims no matter how many administrative feathers they ruffle. Very dark subject matter but Connelly avoids gratuitous or graphic descriptions. This is a great installment of this series and I can't wait to see where Ballard and Bosch go from here. Connelly has still got it!
