The novella was light and fun, the short stories more of a mixed bag. Of course I liked the one about the power of an amazing pair of shoes! 😉. The writing felt a bit like Moyes was channeling Maeve Binchy...
Written in a way that reminds me of my very first chick lit class when I was 18, I enjoyed the exploration of situations unique to women’s experience of life. “Chick Lit” is a term meant to diminish, but using it also provides commentary on what is considered significant and insignificant in our lives. These stories are significant because they reflect the conversations of all the women in my life. In each story, I saw the experience of a close female friend or family member reflected- except their endings are not yet written and I want them to end more positively than even some of the written endings in these stories. This collection of stories explored the point in women’s lives where they stopped voicing or pursing their own desires and wants. When you encounter them, their faces are pinched and anxious from trying to meet everyone else’s needs with no appreciation in return. In several of the stories the woman stumbles across and object that transports her from her comfort zone of choices into the life of another woman. In a way it’s like real-life fairytales sans a fairy godmother. It begs the question, can real women be Cinderellas? And what will be the catalyst to change the sequence of her choices.
Literally so cute but the amount of times cheating occurred and was mentioned was a bit concerning ngl
The first/title story is so cute...the rest are kind of “meh,” but it’s a quick, light read if that is what you are looking for.
It's a cute, easy book. Good for light reading. The stories centre around women who find themselves and (usually) get men who are bad for them out of their lives.
I only read the ‘Paris’ part of this story, so I can’t review the other stories. While the main character is likable, the story was just ‘fine’.
This is a collection of short stories by Jojo Moyes. Some were delightful, some not so much. Here are my individual ratings per story:
*Paris for One - 5 stars - loved it! Would definitely like to see a longer sequel to this.
*Between the Tweets - 3 stars - short but with a twist or two!
*Love in the afternoon - 1 star - not a fan
*A Bird in the Hand - 3 stars - was ok, but would've liked a longer story...and a different ending
*Crocodile Tears - 3.5 stars - has "spice" that I haven't seen before from Moyes
*Holdups - 3 stars - a little confusing for me. Did she just meet Tomasz that day?!?!
*Last Year's Coat - 4 stars - a little predictable, but fun nonetheless
*Thirteen Days with John C - 4 stars - cute story. Ending was good!
*The Christmas List - 5 stars - Great story!!! Perfect to read with just a month until Xmas!
