Wasn’t able to get invested in the plot and didn’t feel a connection to the characters; plan to try again later

I don't know if it's because I haven't slept in 30 hours, but I wanted this book to be over so bad. I was so bored the whole time. Barley anything happened. I love Sarah J Maas books so much, but this... this was bad

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this! Definitely feels a little more plotty/traditional fantasy heavy than SJM’s later works, which intrigues me. I also obviously know the fae/magic are going to more centrally involved in the story (given her later work), so I was also surprised that they were not present here! I also love Chaol and do not care about Dorian in the slightest (and firmly believe I will be correct in that thought over the course of the series), in terms of love triangle land

This felt like the La Croix of fantasy books😅 I'm sure the series gets more fantasy heavy, but I definitely expected more in the first book of the series. The book doesn't explain anything about the world, and we got next to no information about the Marks, despite her reading 12 million books.
Beyond that, this book was just okay. For a book that had a lot happening, nothing actually happened. People no one cared about died. Tests were barely elaborated. She read a lot of books. The stakes felt non-existent. The whole book was telling the reader what happened rather than showing what happened. The love triangle is very unconvincing for that reason. There was no solid character development for any of them. Motivations were unclear, and decisions were questionable. I didn't get a good sense of who each character was. I also didn't care. The book picked up in the last 100ish pages, but it was a struggle for the first 300.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it. I just also don't love it. I will continue to at least the 3rd, as everyone says that's where the series gets good.
P.S. is Fourth Wing just a bad rip off of Throne of Glass?👀
