Who knew that scheming real estate agents would prove to be another form of catnip for me?
This book was a pleasant surprise. I haven't had the best luck with my Kindle First selections, but I thought this one was entertaining. I was invested in all the scheming and backstabbing going on, and I thought the author juggled the cast of characters quite well. The perpetrator wasn't obvious to me, and I thought the book provided plausible reasons for a variety of characters to have wished the victim harm. And though I'm typically not fond of epilogues, I enjoyed this one.
I do have a critique, though. When Krystal's backstory is explored, the book specifically mentions how she had sex with "overweight" men as part of the Hollywood casting couch experience. Why specifically mention the men being "overweight"? Would coercive sex be better if it were perpetrated by ripped, handsome men? To me, this feels very much like the author trying to trigger disgust because of the weight of the men preying on Krystal, when weight has nothing to do with criminal activity. It's so lazy on the part of authors and society at large to use existing prejudices against fat people as a shorthand means of establishing a character's immorality. Anti-fat bias sucks as much as every other type of bias out there and when pop culture perpetuates it, it helps feed and grow that bias, resulting in real and significant harm to actual human beings.

What would you do for a million dollars? Great question which leads to a fast paced, exciting book based in the beautiful setting of LA. I really enjoyed this book and the characters. I normally struggle with lots of different characters and their points of view but it was written so well they were easy to follow.
I can imagine this being the perfect holiday read. Highly recommend.

3.75 rounded up. good little e-read with several storylines meshed together! wish there was more expansion on certain characters that came and went but i could totally see this being adapted into a limited series.
