Almost didn't read this after reading sample chapters and finding them a touch more gory and violent than I was prepared for...if that was how bad it was when the dome came down, imagine how bad it gets when the town goes Lord of the Flies. But the premise intrigued me, I've always preferred King when he mixes in SF, and it was on a really good special, so...

I found it an enthralling read, as good as The Stand (far and away my favourite); loads of characters, the narrative keeps moving, the bad guys are suitably chilling, the gullibilty of the mob is frustrating but not particularly unrealistic (WMD in Iraq, anyone?), and the tension at times such that I couldn't put it down. My only real complaint is that certain characters didn't get nearly enough comeuppance and some of the character's threads are dropped (also at least one minor continuity error).

This book is very reflective of Stephen King's typical style, especially since it dealt more with how people REACT to tragedy/extreme situations than the actual tragedy/extreme situation itself. It's an interesting book, well-written and very well developed, but it lacked a certain aspect of depth that I have come to expect from books that I really like. It was a story, but there was little meaning, at least that I gathered, beyond its surface level. Still a good book, I'm not sure that it was worth reading 1074 pages to finish.

This was my second Stephen King book (after 11/22/63) and wow! Loved it!

Somewhat like Stephen King's "11/22/63" & " Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" this fantasy takes place in Maine; however, the tragedy is intense and extensive involving not only drugs, dirty politics but extra-terrestrial influences!
I could not guess how the drama would end but not many of the multitude of characters in this novel survive (fortunately at least one dog manages)!
