On my reread, I noticed a bit more to love about this. There’s different religions woven in throughout this and a discussion on how similar they are, no matter how different. I will say it was harder for me to enjoy the characters themselves, but the stories within the story were perfect. I loved the lore and the atmosphere. I’m truly disappointed that I missed how good this truly was in my first read.

A little slow in the middle but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Ava Reid writes such beautifully haunting stories with an undercurrent of hope and this was no different.

this book had such amazing mythos and world building, but i feel like we got lost in the sauce in the way of plot.

also, the climax of the novel, to me, happens halfway through, and the second half of the book reads more as the first half of book #2. the pacing was really weird and unsatisfying.

the book wasn’t bad by any means, the religious symbolism and metaphors were beautiful and the characters complex. but if you remove the fantastical language, there is no plot left behind. i felt like something was missing. i got very bored during the second half of the book.

but overall, if you like gruff enemies-to-lovers and copious amounts of fantastical governmental politics, pick this book up!

Surprisingly I didn’t enjoy this book at all. I started it expecting it to be great like her other books but I was really disappointed. At times I found myself tuning out what was happening in the story because I was so bored. I found the fmc to be insufferable with her ‘poor me’ attitude. I wouldn’t recommend this book but if you want to get into Ava Reid I say try Juniper and Thorn first. I am looking forward to Lady Macbeth.
