I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! I struggled at first reading the slice-of-life style of this, but once I began simultaneously listening to the audiobook I was able to focus and read for long stretches of time.
This book was sad, hopeful, tragic and inspiring. I’d recommend if you like character-focused books.

This was such a delightful book, I was sad I hadn't read it sooner. I always thought of it as being a typical coming-of-age book but I found that wasn't the case at all. It reminded me of Frank McCourt in his descriptions of a poor Irish family but the level of insight and detail given to Francie's growing mind are entirely the genius of Betty Smith. I would recommend this highly to anyone who enjoys descriptive, historical and family-centered novels. I look forward to reading some more of her work.
