ehhhh still trying to disentangle what i liked and what i didn't. plot pacing got worse, the characters i'd loved in the first book were mostly offscreen, the girl-on-girl hate and poor incorporation of russian culture into the worldbuilding killed me. but the writing got more profound, and i found myself feeling and grieving with alina, especially at the end.

The second book in a trilogy is usually the weakest, but I honestly feel like Siege and Storm drastically improves on the first installment. I truly felt Mal and Alina's connection, the tension felt much more palpable now that there didn't have to be the interlude at the palace, and I really liked the interplay of politics and the way that duty just weighs on the soul. I have no idea how it would be if you read these all spread out, but reading the series back to back just really creates a cohesive story that builds and builds on itself.

Also, now that I have started looking around on the internet for the fandom of this series, I do not understand the dislike of Mal. Honestly, his reactions seemed completely reasonable to his situation and his biggest crime seems to be 1) not being the Darkling and 2) not being able to read Alina's mind when she is actively pushing him away and not telling him what she's going through and 3) going into a spiral over #2 while also dealing with having his sense of purpose stripped away.

The second installment of the Shadow and Bone series was a whirlwind and I loved it. This is also your friendly reminder to read the books before April when the Netflix series premieres! For such a big book, there isn’t much action in this one, but I am anticipating that tons of action will be present in the final book of the trilogy.

I won’t give away the synopsis as it will definitely spoil the first book, but Siege and Storm continues to follow a young woman named Alina who finds that she possesses magical powers. There are a few new characters introduced as well and while these new characters are super fun, my favorite is still Alina.

I swear to god in the entire middle section of this book nothing happens. After
Alina gets rescued by Nikolai
and before
the Darkling invades Os Alta
, it's just them dawdling about and everyone's upset because they're all dating the wrong people. Bardugo's writing style is the only thing keeping this book above a 2.5.

Hella angsty. Slower than the first book, a lot more planning/political stuff going on. I like alina more in this. She got more spunk. I don't know how I feel about Nikolai. I mean, he's a charming bastard but also he did
kiss alina without her consent. (Would have love to see her hit him one more time).
Also I could've sworn that bardugo was setting up Tamar to be the 4th love interest cuz I was getting some girl in red vibes from her.
The action scenes were really exciting and tense and I wish we could've seen more of them but overall I enjoyed the sequel. The little bits of foreshadowing were so fun! Just enough to give you a hint of something but not so much that you can completely predict what might happen.

I definitely preferred the first book over this one.  Will still read the third, but I often found myself struggling to stay interested in this one, and had no particular motivation to read it.
