This was an enjoyable read but I think I prefer Poirot in novel form more than in vignettes.
It's not clear from the cover that this is a collection of short stories. They help illustrate Poirot's genius by showing how little he can work with to solve a crime, but some feel like they'd make more interesting expanded works. A few stories are rife with racial terms that will make you cringe but were acceptable at the time of publishing. Enjoyable but not my favorite Poirot, though it's fun to follow him into numerous adventures with Hastings in each story.
Classic early Christie...in the not-so-good sense. Some clever mysteries here, but neither Poirot nor Hastings shine among the melodramatic situations and predictable ethnic stereotypes. Even more, several of them feel like echoes of Holmes and Watson more than the Poirot and Hastings partnership of later, stronger, stories. Still, I'm one closer to finishing my reading of all of Agatha Christie's oeuvre, so there's that.
