Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review!
The title is intriguing and the description really drew me in. But once I started reading, it was difficult for me to get into the story. It felt like there was a distance between me as the reader and the characters in this book. No character was particularly likable and even when the body appeared, I was only mildly curious.
I'll likely try more from Ed Brubaker in the future, but this book wasn't for me. I could see this working for people who are into film noir-style crime movies. They had a similar vibe.

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC of this graphic novel.
I've enjoyed a lot of the Brubaker/Phillips graphic novels such as Criminal, Fatale, and Reckless, so I was very excited to check out Where the Body Was.
Ostensibly about a dead body that appears in a neighborhood in the 80s, WtBW uses the viewpoints of different neighbors to weave together a mystery that doesn't reveal itself until the end. While maintaining a number of the pulpy aspects of their previous works, Where the Body Was has a little bit more heart and wistful nostalgia, and less of the grit and grime. I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

Even Brubaker’s weakness is still pretty good. This one tries to be a bit of a “how” dunnit but doesn’t always the characters or plot enough time to breathe, but when it sticks the landing it’s great.
