A broad historical sweep taking a single place at seven different historical moments, some past, some future, told in a rather gothic tone - homage to Lovecraft, perhaps, except here the unspeakable horrors of times past are us humans.

this was AWESOME. and less than 100 pages. Amazingly simple concept, an alien species lands at the cradle of humanity, the Olduvai gorge. ONe of the aliens has the ability to relive experiences by simply touching objects. We relive the experience of the downfall of humanity via these 7 objects. Awesome concept and execution, I ate this up.

I am a huge fan of stories with this premise: that man is an unstoppable scourge in the galaxy, that our fate is not only in the stars but as masters of them. Danger--Human by Gordon R. Dickson is another great example of this trope.

I feel like I need a lengthy explanation on why I didn't give 5 stars to a story that swept all the awards. I would give it 4.5 if I could, but ultimately it wasn't a story I was trying to find excuses to pick up my kindle to read. It also tastes like the era in which it was written. I would recommend it to anyone.

Interesting, short, perhaps not totally satisfying. The humans extinguished by disgruntled aliens in "Birthright" are still extant, in the form of shambling, de-evolved animals, wandering around Olduvai Gorge, waiting for an opportunity to return.
