This book. Holy shit this book. It’s intoxicating. The story is rich, the characters are interesting and it all harkens to our world and how we treat those that are different.
N.K. Jemisin’s writing is beautiful and I couldn’t stop reading. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Tight prose and compelling worldbuilding from a phenomenal Black author.
I really enjoyed how The Fifth Season invites you into its world, a land where orogenes (individuals gifted/cursed with the power to control the earth itself) are tightly woven into the history of the continent. Their powers are raw and sometimes instinctual, and the entire setting reflects how others ("stills") both fear and seek to control the people with these incredible abilities. It is a society which feels lived-in, which has the weight of history shaping every aspect of its present. Jemisin uses the language of this society-- Use Names to indicate social roles, a whole vocabulary (and slang) around orogeny and its sources-- to create a thoroughly immersive fantasy without feeling pretentious about it.
Beyond the worldbuilding this is a story about people, about hope and loss and wandering. It is a story where the (latest) apocalypse is taking place in slow motion. Jemisin's use of second-person in the segments focusing on Essun is also a bold choice, and yet it works beautifully. The timeline is confusing at first, but it all clicks into place by the end, and I am keen to read the other books in the series.

I know there are only 5 starts for grading in this platform but I need a sixth one for this book.
