3.5* really liked it but the ending was super rushed!
I love this series, but after rereading I realized how little time the two main characters actually spend with each other. It's a great introduction to the story and the rest of the guys, but I wish there was a little less insta-love between the two mc's.
Overall still a good book and a great introduction to the Lords of the Underworld.

I wasn’t really sure how to rate this book. Yes, it is a good story, but I think I’m struggling with the fact that it is not “my kind” of story. I feel like it is a 4-star book, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the other 4-star books on my list, thus the 3 stars.
This is a very popular series enjoyed by many, however, I’m 75% sure that I will not continue the series, but I don’t know, I might get curious enough to want to know how they fair in their war against the Titans.
I think I didn’t connect with the main characters. I believe that is the problem. Actually, I think they were both kind of boring. I just don’t know, we’ll see if after some time passes if I read the next book.

Everything about this book is rubbing me the wrong way. I wish I did like it since quite a few of my Goodreads friends seemed to really enjoy it, but I just can't bring myself to finish reading it. I got to page 215 before I threw in the towel.
Had high expectations for this. I'm hoping the series improves!

Ashlyn can hear voices of a place and has worked with the Institute to do something. Maddox is part human and part demon (Violence) something something something Pandora's Box. Maddox lives on a hill over Budapest with other half demon men and rescues Ashlyn from something.
The pacing was terrible and the action was sadly lacking. Not that I really wanted action, but when I expected it and instead got a bunch of people standing around for 20+ pages at a time whining about how they were going to take action it was really boring. The guys were all such alphas and completely interchangeable. But beyond the pacing and characterization and odd frame, there was a plot point that completely threw me.
It is one thing to say that you'd die for the person you love. But another to convince people to kill you instead of the meathead you met a few days earlier and actually go through with the plan is downright screwy. Especially when killing him doesn't really kill him what with the eternal demon thing. That isn't love and passion. That is insanity. And at that this book lost all credibility (all that it started off with a bunch of half demons living in a castle on a hill above Budapest).

As the GoodReads rating says, "It was ok."
I don't hate this book, but I also don't think that I like it exactly. There are several concepts in the premise of the story that I enjoy the idea of, but I don't feel satisfied with how everything was executed. It wasn't painful to read, as most books I rate with 3 or fewer stars make reading a grueling process, but I was easily able to read The Darkest Night for long periods of time without wondering "how much longer is this going to take?". Maybe it's because I'm not much of a romance reader, maybe it's because I take my mythology a little too seriously, or maybe it's because plot was altogether rushed through and the dialogue was so awkward that there just wasn't much to love... again, I'm not a romance reader so instant hard-ons fueled by dangerously forbidden love at first sight doesn't really work as a narrative anchor for me, and that's basically what each chapter comes back to. All that being said, I wouldn't be opposed to reading more of the series, but as a light filler read; I'm not dying to know what happens next.

Paranormal stories are fairly popular, paranormal romances are insanely successful, and paranormal romance series are a dime a dozen. The paranormal genre in general, and romance series specifically, are more common than the cold.
But good paranormal romance series are rather rare, and overwhelmingly addictively awesome PNR series are downright impossible to find!
Until now.
I used to think that the only two overtly amazing series on the market were Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series and JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
Now there’s a new author and series I can add to the list; Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld.
The Darkest Night is absolutely, positively one of the best novels I have read in a long, long time. The writing displayed by Showalter, first off, is overwhelmingly good, and that in and of itself is worth endless pages of praise. However, what makes this book so grandly wonderful is the characters!
I am absolutely in love with Maddox and Ashlyn! Their story was so powerful, so visceral and passionate, so damned emotional that I was grabbed by the collar and sucked into the story to a level that was as extreme as it was unexpected.
The plot, too, was fascinating. So different. So unusual! With paranormal romance series selling like hotcakes anymore, one would think discovering new story lines would be an impossibility, but Showalter proves otherwise! This book took so many various turns and reroutes that I was left constantly surprised and entertained. The emotion of the characters combined with the plot, too, is yet another reason I am absolutely in love with the series in general, and the book specifically.
I laughed! I cried! I downright had a geek-gasm over every single Lord in the book that I am as enthralled with their appearance in this story as I was in love with the primary plot!
Lastly, the pacing in this novel, too, was very interesting and unique, written in a way that is both quick and yet drawn out. The scenes in the book were so dynamic and edgy that I’m literally frantic to begin the next installment to this series!
