Entertaining read - reminded me a bit of Vaughan's Runaways. Looking forward to future volumes.

Fun retelling of the origin of the Teen Titans. Needed more Raven, though....hopefully volume 2 will!

A fun reimagining of the origins for the Teen Titans! Fast-paced with a lot of unique twists on what we’d usually expect.

”You’ve always known what you are. You’re a bird. A beautiful Raven.”

I love the new designs for them a lot. Raven is stunning in particular and offers some Indigenous rep with her guardian being a Navajo elder. I loved Garfield too, as always, and I liked his belief in and love for his parents. The inclusion of Terra and Joey spiced it all up a little as it’s not the usual team we expect to see!

I did find some of the plot quite predictable and I didn’t like the weird hypocrisy of some of these characters. Like, they seemed to flip flop between “I’m not your real parent” and “I care about you because I’m your parent” which made no sense to me. It actually got kind of grating as I kept reading - because they all kept saying the same things.

However! I liked the setup of this and look forward to the next one. Especially now that my favorite of all, Starfire, is fully in the picture!

Disclaimer: I had never read a Teen Titans book before, or watched the cartoon show that was popular with a slightly younger generation. I was familiar with various versions of Cyborg, and recently learned more about the mega-powerful Raven, but rest of these characters were new to me. I have no idea how closely this origin story deviates from more well-known canons or Earth 616 history, and wasn't attached to or excited about the characters to begin with.

But Jeff Lemire manages to write a pretty good, well-paced story of high schoolers suddenly acquiring new powers and discovering the evil secrets their parents had kept from them.

That's pretty much it. 2.5 stars

Gosh I really enjoyed this. I loved the show when I was a kid and I got a bundle of The New Teen Titans at an antique shop when I was touring colleges in high school and it became my first super hero comic love. I'd seen the Earth One books around and was intrigued, but I saw this, I saw the characters, and I knew I had to have it. I'm so glad I picked it up, if you're a Titans fan, this is a must have. Everything's familiar enough to make you properly nostalgic and different enough to keep you surprised. Great read!

A very different, very interesting take on the Teen Titans. It had much darker tones than I thought it was going to have. But I liked it a lot and I'm eager to see where this goes in Volume 2. My only problem, I think, is that it is far too short. I want more!

Take what worked about the Ultimate universe back in its prime and the tone and direction of Runaways and apply it to one of the most beloved DC Comics superhero teams and you have yourself a fun reinvention that continually catches you off-guard.
