This is the story of Vyry, a woman born to a Black, slave mother and the white "marster". The story follows her from slavery, through the Civil War, and into her freedom. The plot is sprawling and the characters are powerful. Vyry herself is an incredibly resilient woman who continually chooses love over hate, despite all the trials she faces throughout her life. Vyry humanizes a major period of American history. The fact that this was based on Walker's great-grandmother (and great-grandfather) adds an important layer to the story. Grateful that this was sent to me in my Page 1 subscription!

The premise of this book reminded me of the TV show “Underground” so I instantly checked it out. It was very transformative. The comprehensive look at Vyry’s life was both eye-opening and, at times, difficult to endure.

Historical fiction at its best. Written 50 years ago tho book is still as perfect as the genre gets.
