Brilliantly written with a sure and engaging style. The characters leapt off the page and had clear voices throughout. i had to let go a bit and just go with the vibes but hoo boy did i love the ride. this felt so fresh and unique. i loved the concept and it was really interesting to see how it was developed. the ending felt a little rushed but i'm interested in checking out the second one!

I wanted to like this book.
But around 100 pages in I found myself skimming just to get through it faster. I thought the premise would be interesting but I found it confusing not having one main protagonist - instead you get at least 5. All of the main characters I disliked. I didn’t like their personalities, they all felt somewhat angry?
I couldn’t understand the motive of the antagonist. Why is this happening? Just cuz?
Once again proof that I am not a fantasy reader, I suppose.

This was fantastic. Highly recommend. Thank you to the audio team behind this, and the narrator for making it outstanding!

I used to be fascinated by New York as a child, and I feel like I understand it better than I ever could thanks to this book. It was scary, it was funny, it was tense, and even though I'm not from New York, nor have I ever even been to New York, the warm feeling of home and connectedness to something bigger than yourself is very familiar. I wonder what the Bay Area's denizens would be like.

This was so fucking good. As someone who loves stories where cities are a character in and of themselves, I was spoiled by the way Jemisin made New York into six distinct protagonists. I understand why this book wouldn't be for everyone but I couldn't tear myself away.
