This was the DEFINITION of a slow-paced book. I kept reading and reading and nothing ever seemed to actually happen. It’s like the author went out of her way to avoid showing us the action, only describing it later through memories. The characters were oddly distant, and I couldn’t quite follow their motivations a lot of the time.

Also, there were some intimate scenes in here that were VERY uncomfortable for a variety of reasons. So if you read this…be warned.

It wasn’t all bad, though. The historical aspect was very interesting, and the author did an amazing job with descriptions of the natural world. The setting itself really drew me in, and I wish I could see the beauty of this place and time for myself.

I loved every minute of this book. Sure, it was slow at parts and I didn’t know how to pronounce 99% of the names and sometimes the amount of detail was *almost* too much, but dang, what a book. I really fell in love with the setting and being in Hild’s head. I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone, but I think if you love becoming completely immersed in a book, this one is for you.

A masterpiece. Rich with history, but also description and excitement, intrigue and emotion.

Hild is a 'seer' but actually she just pays attention and notices the world. Sometimes this is horrible (dark age Britain is not a friendly place), but often it is so, so beautiful.

Pleased to see that I've timed my read well. After 10 years, Nicola Griffith is publishing the sequel... On my birthday. What a treat
