Spare yourself the endless, meandering and pointless details of 7th century Britain. Spare yourself never meeting characters, spare yourself hours of farm work. Unless that’s your kink, I guess. Otherwise it was insufferably impenetrable and ended up a rare DNF.

Goddamn. I know why and it fits, but I wish Hild didn’t have to be all Star Wars with the incest . Flush world building, like Beowulf on crack, visceral. She’s really fucking smart for a 13 year old.
Finally finished. Normally i give up on books i struggle with - life is too short - but i persisted. I admire the research and the effort done on Hild's PoV; very impressive. Doubt i'll read it again, but am glad i read it through.

I really fell for this book, perhaps because it's a difficult read. 7th century place names and character names, plus some random old words thrown in for good measure meant I had to work much harder at this book than I'm used to. For me, it paid off. Hild was a wonderful character and she was surrounded by great characters. The political intrigue and action packed into these pages was so well done.
But I would hesitate to recommend this book because it was such a challenge. YMMV.

Hild is an enormously self assured book, confident to mix is old English and ancient politics, never holding the readers hand or pulling its punchs. Grounded on what must be a truly spectacular amount of research and a deeply rich imaginative soil, Hild reads like a cross of Sand County Almanac and Game of Thrones, weaving the rhythms of nature together with the tides of religious politics and the growing of a young woman, and the court of people around her. I love seeing the characters change in their relationships and in themselves over the years of the book. The pacing of the novel is very strange; history and nature do not care about rising action, but I still feel certain scenes were not given the weight they deserved, and a few others overstayed their welcome. Hild is a book that speaks strongly to its authors talent.
