What am I missing? Why is this book so well known and so acclaimed? It was nothing but a depressing slog for me. It's a book I told myself I should read because it's a classic and it's been on my bookshelf for years, but it was never anything but a chore.

Everything about it is so depressing. A husband who is blind (figuratively) and stupid. A wife who is perpetually dissatisfied with her life leading her to multiple affairs and exorbitant spending, none of which make her happy or content. And a cast of side characters who completely failed to spark my imagination or inspiration at all.

Some classics hold up over time. In fact you could argue that that is the definition of a classic. I did not find that to be true with this book. There is humor and characters who are exaggeratedly ridiculous (presumably included for the purpose of adding humor) but they are dated and have not aged well in the years that have passed since the book was written.

The moral of this story: live within your budget, don't read romance novels because they will make you loathe your husband, and never ever let a country doctor in 19th century France convince you that he can correct your club foot with surgery.

Conhecendo o enredo, dediquei-me a certos detalhes que me permitiram confrontar a obra com as duas citadas.

Eu adorei.

DID NOT FINISH

Got through about 150 pages and just couldn't do it anymore. Endless amounts of nothing. On top of it, Madame drives me insane. This is again one of those "perfect" classics that I am just not liking. I get that it is a commentary on class and other important stuff, but it is just too boring. Actually, after reading wikipedia it appears that it was finally going to get interesting because I stopped just before the affairs started, but really life is too short to read books I don't like.

boo. boring boring boring. i read this (half of it i think) because it was a mandatory summer reading book before my senior year of high school. all i can say is BORING.

I'm really beginning to wish I could give books a 1/2 star rating -- this one would go for 3.5 in my book. It's well-written and intriguing, but between this and The Memory Keeper's Daughter, I'm just sort of burned out on the whole people-screwing-up-their-own-lives theme. Time for something happier, I think.

Wow. This is the first time I have ever read this book and it captured my attention from the first page. It is so well written and I love the descriptions. This book made me wish I could read French so I could read the original book. What a sad, heartbreaking tale. Madame Bovary was a horrible person who wasn't content in her life. But if you think about how life was on 1800s for a woman it may drive them to desperate measures. You had to marry, there was no other choice. How different her life could have been if she had been able to have a trade or career!

this is hands down my favorite book of all time. i've never read another book that i feel so strongly about. i've probably read this book 100 times. and i'm not even exaggerating. i honestly love it, and never get sick of it.

every time i read this book, i find another reason to hate emma bovary. honestly, i've never felt this strong a feeling towards a character in a book or a movie....or anyone in real life, actually. it's this very reason that i can say with no doubts, madame bovary is my favorite novel of all time. i mean, she instills such anger in me every time i read the book. for a while, i tried reading the book with the sole intent to find something likeable in her...to no avail. she really is unlikeable.

because of her selfish, manipulative traits, i grow to love charles bovary more...and feel worse and worse for him upon each reading. he is such a simple man...and he gets rolled over by emma at every turn.

i have recommended this book to many people, and no one, (and i mean NO ONE has ever liked it even near as much as i do. actually...i'm not sure that anyone i recommended it to even liked it at all.

no matter. it's still the best book i've ever read.

Awful, awful story. Jumps around too much; I never know who is being discussed, the story lacks a main character (they all appear to be main characters). It just doesn't make sense. It's very (overly) detailed about things that add nothing at all to the story. I had to read this for a class; had it been on my own time, I would not have finished it.
